Everybody Pees
20 Jan 2012 | 2:11 amFirst graders are cute. They may be little monsters who are stuck somewhere between the baby stage and middle childhood, but that's why I love them. They say funny things, do funny thing, and their general naiveity about the world can be flat out hilarious. Take this instance from a few weeks back:'Teacher! Bathroom!''No, sorry. You need to go before class. We just started, and you were here playing cell phone games in the hallway for ten minutes before class. You'll have to wait''Bathroom!''No, James. You do this everyday, and you were fine three minutes ago. You can't possibly have to go… -
Here's to Second Chances
13 Jan 2012 | 9:32 amI just got back from saying goodbye to a friend. I've said goodbye to a lot people in my time in Korea, as that seems to be the nature of living as an expat in a foreign country. You let people into your lives, only to watch them leave a short while later. It makes things hard, as you begin to question what it means to be a true friend and what role the people you meet really play in your life. The true friends, you stay in contact with. And the rest end up just making you feel a little more popular on Facebook. But that's not this issue here. This time the goodbye was a lot different. This… -
Why So Serious?: Thoughts on the Yin and Yang of the Korean Peninsula
6 Jan 2012 | 5:03 amThis is what happens when an unstoppalbe force meets and immovable object. You are truly incorruptible aren't you? You won't kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness. And I won't kill you because you're just too much fun. I think you and I are destined to do this forever...I don't want to kill you! What would I do without you?...No, no, No! No. You...you...complete me."In some East Asian philosophies, it is said that everything functions on a balance between yin and yang. The world is in a constant battle of opposites: good and evil, loud and soft, strong and weak, North and… -
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and all that jazz
31 Dec 2011 | 3:45 amOn the eve of 2012, five hours before the rabbit hops out and the year of the dragon storms in, I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I had a wonderful holiday, having the opportunity to spend a few days with the wife and in-laws in 속초 (Sokcho) before heading back to Seoul mid-week to frantically get together my applications for graduate school. No resolutions this year. But through this whole application process I've come to the realization that I should really do something about the size of my vocabulary. If I'm going to… -
Minus One Tyrannical (and Uniquely Fashionable) Dictator
18 Dec 2011 | 11:26 pmBig news out of Pyongyang today, as it is being reported that North Korea's 'Dear Leader' Kim Jong-Il has died of a heart attack. Only time will tell what this really means for the Korean peninsula and the rest of the world, but from the intial reports, one can only hope and pray that this will spark the beginning of a new era of positive change north of the DMZ.And while very few of us will miss Kim's nuclear holocaustic threats, we will always remember Kim Jong-Il for how much he enjoyed looking at things through those stylish, stylish specs.Until next time,-스티브

A Week of Things
18 Jan 2012 | 5:59 amThis week I have had Chloe from Melbourne staying at my house. We've been to the Little Chief Christmas Party, watched Stu support Beirut with Tono and the Finance Company at the Powerstation and tonight we went to a David Sedaris reading at the Town Hall and ate at The Depot afterwards.David Sedaris is one of my favourite authors to recommend at the bookstore, I love finding someone who has never read him before and sharing the Sedaris joy. I told him this when I met him this evening - he just smiled sweetly, we had a chat about the rise of independent bookstores, he told me he liked my… -

Dum Dum Girls at the Kings Arms
7 Jan 2012 | 11:16 pmI really, really wanted to be a part of the Bangles when I was small person. The modern version of this dream would to be a part of the Dum Dum Girls, but I don't think I have the bad ass rock'n'roll goods. Or musical talent. (Though I do have a fringe...)On Friday night, I took some photos at the Dum Dum Girls concert for Volume Magazine. These Californian ladies know how to rock ripped tights, lace and short shorts, which were well appreciated by the crowd. The Korean Food Truck Adventures: Chapter 6: Korean Palate Training
26 Jan 2012 | 7:36 pmPeople often ask me when why I am working so hard to perfect my Korean food recipes if I’m using family recipes. They seem surprised when I tell them “No”. Don’t get me wrong, I wish I was using family recipes; it would have made the last three months a lot easier. Unfortunately my halmoni (grandmother) passed away 6 years ago and my aunts are too far away for me to be able to learn much of anything. Everything I’ve learned about Korean food I’ve had to learn the hard way; research, books and eating. Okay, so the eating wasn’t that hard and I get to pretend I’m Dae Jang… -
A Walking Martini
24 Jan 2012 | 6:53 pmIt’s a day of snow in Seoul. One of many I don’t know. It came late last night and blanketed the walks. It awaited us in the morning as we woke. One cup of coffee to get going. A hot shower for strength. I layered myself for the impending freeze. I wish I had more practical shoes. Walking in the snow in sneakers is like balancing a tray of martinis. The glass designed for elegance and to maintain micro crystals of ice isn’t too practical I imagine I will tumble my contents on the icy walk, splitting my head and sending splinters of pain into my backside. I walk flatfooted. I… -

My Weekend In the Korean Country
23 Jan 2012 | 4:49 amThis was the first Seollal (Korean New Years) with my Korean mother. It’s a bit strange because I always adored how quiet the city was when the rest of the country was making their trips to their hometowns. Though I was a bit weary, I decided to make the trek home. I expected more craziness on my first venture during Seollal. It was crazier at the airport the year I went to Bali. I went to the bus station and got my ticket and an hour later I was on my way. There wasn’t even that much traffic. Home for me is 5 hours away and requires a transfer. Once I arrive in my hometown, I… -
Hiking – Gwanaksan (관악산)
22 Jan 2012 | 6:18 pmDirections: Sadang Station (Line 2/1) Exit 4, walk 5 minutes and make a sharp right and walk up the hill. Follow other climbers or look out for hiking stores. It’s not hard to find, fear not. And getting lost is always fun. We entered here at Sadang station, hiked for 3 hours to the peak, and then hobbled down on numb legs into Seoul National University which nuzzles its northwest boundary. From there we thankfully hopped on a bus and made our way home. At this point my adventures in hiking Seoul numbers the pathetically low number of two times. However, I’ll tell you what I…

Korean Gender Reader
24 Jan 2012 | 9:01 am(Source) If you’ll please indulge an old Korean Studies geek for a moment, Girlfriday’s review of Dancing Queen (댄싱퀸) at Dramabeans this week instantly reminded me of The Adventures of Mrs. Park (박봉곤 가출사건), from way back in 1996. After all, both are about wives who blatantly defy their husbands to follow their dreams of becoming singers, both are comedies, and – I’ll take a wild guess about Dancing Queen – both wives are ultimately successful. One likely difference though, is that Mrs. Park runs away from her husband. And in fact, The… -
Quick Hit: T-Ara’s Stereotyping of Native-Americans in YaYaYa
22 Jan 2012 | 7:18 pm(Source) Shocked and confused by the video for YaYaYa (야야야)? If so, I give a very quick introduction to K-pop and media representations of other races in Korea over at Sociological Images, to help readers unfamiliar with either place it in some context. If you’re one of those, I hope it does, and I especially recommend one of the links I give in the post – Who is Korean? Migration, Immigration, and the Challenge of Multiculturalism in Homogeneous Societies, by Timothy Lim – for anyone further interested in race-relations in Korea. Meanwhile, I was tempted to translate… -
Ali Meets Father of 8 year-old Rape Victim “Na-young”
20 Jan 2012 | 2:20 am(Source) If you’ve never heard of Ali (알리), Na-young (나영; a pseudonym), or their connection, please see Seoulbeats for some background. Assuming that you have, I’d like to add just two things here. First, that, back in December 2008, the combination of the particularly horrific nature of the crime and the light sentencing of the rapist simply incensed the Korean public. So, for a change, perhaps one can understand the severity of netizens’ reactions to Ali using Na-young’s name in a song title. Next, I don’t mean to sound facetious, but in a sense that… -

International Magazines in Korea: A Cultural Invasion? (Part 1)
17 Jan 2012 | 3:46 am(Sources: left, right) With covers like these, it’s easy to overestimate the “Westernizing” effects international magazines have on modest Korean readers. Especially by those who resent such changes. Say, those who have ever called someone a “beanpaste girl” (dwengjangnyeo; 된장녀) for instance, a derogatory term for young women that supposedly spend beyond their means in pursuit of a Sex and the City lifestyle. But which in practice they can be called for doing no more than simply buying Starbucks coffee, nice clothes, or foreign food. When such decadent…

Bulgogi Spaghetti Sauce?
27 Jan 2012 | 1:56 amOttogi’s Fresco, the general jarred spaghetti brand for Korea, recently introduced a Bulgogi flavor. As you can see, it’s “Beef 12%!” I’m not a big fan of jarred spaghetti sauces, especially ones with meat, but I had to try this. Yes, like most meat jarred spaghetti sauces, the actual meat appears as tiny specks. I honestly didn’t taste any unique bulgogi flavor. It was like the usual Meat Fresco. But hey, I bet you some hipster food truck or narrow-tabled restaurant will throw a Bulgogi Pasta on a menu and charge $30 for it. -
Recipe: Korean Fried Chicken Nuggets
25 Jan 2012 | 1:58 amI received a box of Kikkoman Kara-Áge Soy-Ginger Seasoned Coating Mix courtesy of the Foodbuzz Tastemakers Program to review. I didn’t sign up for it the first time around because I couldn’t think of a Korean way to use this classic Japanese cooking technique. By the time the chance came around again, I knew I wanted to experiment with the Kara-Áge coating and find out if it could be a recipe-less way to make basic Korean fried chicken. The box contains two mix pouches, each able to easily coat 11/2 pounds of chicken or fish. Two pouches, so here are two versions. … -
Tex-Mex Bibimbap
24 Jan 2012 | 10:40 pmKorean food purists walk away. One evening last week I took over dinner prep and thought I’d make some chicken burritos. Got everything ready and then took out the tortillas. They’d grown a bit of mold. Each one. So I was stuck with the ingredients I had put together. Well, why not replace one starch with another? So I got a metal bowl, put in a few scoops of rice, and topped it with fajita chicken and onions, lettuce, shredded Monterey Jack, and salsa. Stirred it up and didn’t expect it to taste any good. It was damn good! The cheese brought it together. Melted a bit in the… -
Sweet Soy Glazed Lotus Roots (Yeongeun Jorim)
19 Jan 2012 | 6:14 pmyeongeun jorim – home style Yeongeun 연근 (lotus root) jorim 조림 (reduced) is one of the basic, everyday banchan 반찬 (side dishes) found at home tables and restaurants. It is a simple dish of sliced lotus roots boiled then reduced in soy sauce and corn syrup. That’s also how a Korean mother will describe it to you if you asked about a recipe of this dish. It is true to some extent, that there isn’t much to this side dish. Aside from the basic ingredients of lotus root, water, soy sauce, and some kind of sweetener such as sugar or corn syrup 물엿… -
Clearing Some Bossam Myths
18 Jan 2012 | 2:21 amReal Korean Bossam | Credit: Pixelgrapher from Flickr (cc) The New York Times has a scrumptious piece showcasing David Chang’s recipe for bo ssam (“The Bo Ssam Miracle”). It’s gorgeous. I’ve heard it tastes great. And I would love to try it myself. I also see why some of my friends hate David Chang. I thought it was that they were just being stubborn Korean food purists, if there is such a thing. The fear, though, is that people will start thinking that David Chang’s interpretations of Korean food are traditional Korean food. It brings to mind when New…

금천시장 | Geumcheon Market
18 Dec 2011 | 8:38 amI love street food. One of my new favourite food alleyways in Seoul is Geumcheon Market. It’s a great place to sample all sorts of traditional Korean dishes. The restaurants and bars are sandwiched together along the strip so you don’t have to hop very far to the next venue. I started eating here a lot after I moved north of the river to Seochon-dong. The food is excellent and affordable. There’s this fantastic mandu (traditional Korean dumpling) snack restaurant called 손만두 분식 that’s been in business for ten years. Dumplings are handmade on site and will run… -

Gwanghwamun Café is nice little spot. The owner roasts all the beans himself. Great coffee to be had here. Onmaeul Tofu Restaurant (738-4231) in Samcheong-dong has been in business for 14 years. Jungbopsa (정법사) & Gilsangsa (길상사)
20 Nov 2011 | 6:44 amSpent the afternoon walking through Seongbuk-dong. Aside from the impressive architecture, it’s where you’ll also find one of Seoul’s best teahouses. I wanted to check out the Korean Furniture Museum but as it was closed I headed over to Gilsangsa (길상사) instead, which is literally right around the corner. Gilsangsa is beautiful this time of year. Before the temple was first registered in 1995, the grounds were home to “Daewongak,” one of Korea’s most famous restaurants. Just up the street I discovered, in an equally beautiful setting, is Jungbopsa…

SOPA-What?
18 Jan 2012 | 1:18 pmOver the last couple of weeks the Internets have been on fire, outraged against the prospect of two pieces of legislation being passed in the United States Congress: SOPA and PIPA. The Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect Intellectual Property Act are two bills that are supposed to protect the rights of content creators against copyright infringement. New Year's Resolutions
10 Jan 2012 | 12:32 pmOK so the first 2 weeks of the year have already gone - so you might think I am a bit late. On the other hand I like to test the water a little before jumping in, dangle a toe or a foot into the pool you might say before making a commitment. There's not much to these resolutions. The simpler the more likely achieved I should think. So here they are: Keep practicing photography. It's good to have a hobby - especially one that has nothing to do with either work or doing something Korea-centric. Keeps the mind fresh is at least a little artistic (not just simply a visual record of what I have… -

Go, Go Gadget Shopper
2 Jan 2012 | 12:27 pmWords by Stafford Lumsden, shots by Judith Clancy and Matthew Crompton Korea (and Seoul in particular) is a Mecca for shoppers looking for deals on electronics. From home appliances to cameras and computers to MP3 players, Seoul is bursting with options on places to shop, and for the brave, places to find a bargain. Yongsan Electronics Market The term “market” is something of a misnomer when it comes to Yongsan. With three mall-sized complexes and shops and stalls stretching over three city blocks, Yongsan is more than a mere market. iPark Mall, part of the actual Yongsan… -

2 Jan 2012 | 12:19 pmWords by Stafford Lumsden From left: Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Fire With the cooling weather and Christmas vacation on the horizon, you have a good excuse to curl up somewhere warm with a good book. Except the notion of “a book” is rapidly changing. With the latest iterations of its Kindle, Amazon is taking the whole paradigm of buying and reading books in a whole new direction. This month three new Kindles were added to the line up bringing the number of models to six in all, ranging from just $109 to $199 for the top-end Android powered tablet-like version. Cold Hands
11 Jan 2012 | 6:37 amSeoul is mighty cold in the winter. Nearly everyone here has a smart phone. But not everyone knows the cheapest, easiest way to keep your gloves on while using the phone… I have an expensive stylus I would rather not drop/lose on the street. Ta-da: the sausage-cheese-fishcake works like a ”finger”. Somehow it has the right electrostatic to function well, though not perfectly, on my phone for spare change (less than 500W or $0.50USD). I have these yellow sausages stashed in all my coat pockets, handbags and… -
Daycare Dough
14 Dec 2011 | 12:56 amApologies for the lengthy absence of posting. I can’t say that my posts will return with any frequency, but when I do blog, it will be noteworthy. Korea has a very low birth rate and the government is eager to encourage population growth. As result, there are various monetary incentives to promote larger families. For example, since the birth of our second child we have been receiving 100,000W (approx. $100 USD) per month (child must be a Korean national~our son has dual citizenship). There is daycare dough for multicultural families (one parent is a Korean national, other parent is a… -
Ice Cold
3 Dec 2010 | 7:41 amMy toddler begs to go out everyday. It’s been difficult lately because we had to change nannies again. Still, he refused to wear his hat or gloves and spent all his time playing with ice cold sand. -
November 11
10 Nov 2010 | 7:00 amTomorrow is November 11th which means Peppero Day in Korea. I’ll be buying a giant box because they are only available this time of year. It’s also the start of the G20 meetings in Seoul. FYI: plan on not going to or near COEX because the security is extreme. -
Baby Clock
24 Oct 2010 | 9:06 pmThere is a clock on the refrigerator that tells baby time. First-time guests think it’s a toy teach-me-clock but it actually serves many purposes. With a newborn set the clock to the time of the last feeding ~ better to gauge the next feeding or why she is crying. With a toddler set the clock to the time of yesterday’s nap ~ know when to start winding down for naptime. Magnets mark when there was poop ~ helps plan outings. It’s easier to read than a note that will get lost in the daily shuffle. Baby clock indicates that our toddler napped at 11:30am with poops after…

Innumeracy in the News
25 Jan 2012 | 10:44 pmSeveral news sources, probably beginning with Yonhap, the Korean News Service, have reported that Seoul's bus and subway fares are going to rise by 150 won next month. That translates to about 13 cents US money, or a 17% rise. That's significant to some, especially those who use the system on a daily basis. But wait. The story goes on to say:The city government has come up with a proposal to raise bus and subway fares from 900 won to 1,150 won (traffic card fares for adult) next month, while freezing prices for students and children, officials said.See the problem? An increase from 900 to… -
Book Report: Seollal 2012
24 Jan 2012 | 11:08 amOperation Spider-Web by MH Sargent - Sargent has created an interesting team of CIA operatives who work, at least in this tale, third in the series, within Military Intelligence. Gonz, Heisman, McKay and Peterson seem to work together well, and I suspect their backstory is covered in a previous tome, but that doesn't matter so much compared to the current plot. And on that topic, I'm not sure I buy the initial story that gets the team involved in the operation that forms the focus of the book; but once they are in it, it is a gripping and realistic series of events. A fun, easy read for those… -

Meeting a North Korean
17 Jan 2012 | 10:25 amTalk to enough South Koreans, and eventually you meet North Koreans. Our little street in Bongcheon (see the previous post) is populated by ethnic North Koreans who came here through China a generation ago. At my school, I have mentioned we have a boy from North Korea, whose family arrived here in March or April 2011. He came to our school about two weeks after second semester began, in September 2011. His English was non-existent, and his Korean, at least of the variety spoken in the South, nearly so. Over the course of a semester, he improved considerably, and even semed to understand me a… -

A stack of thirty lamb skewers and some cold, crisp lager are the key ingredients to a delicious meal in the Chinatown street of Bongcheon with friend Kevin (seen here with the 서장님):This delicacy is a Chinese/Mongolian favorite (most Koreans don't much care for lamb meat) but we're in Seoul, so it's served Korean style, cooked at the table. When the meat is grilled, it's stored on the rack above until you dip it in the seasoning:The other main attraction of Bongcheon is our favorite country-style makkeoli 집 where the best in the city is still 1,000…

Open the Happy Loot Bag!
27 Jan 2012 | 5:28 amHi guise! So we did a super serious topic on Bullying in South Korea yesterday, and we’re happy to see that’s its generated some really good discussion. But over here at the eatyourkimchi household, we like to balance out the serious with some silliness. That’s why we opened up our new channel, Open the Happy, to share with you all the different things that make us happy, and hopefully, you happy too. Think of it like a loot bag that you get after a kids birthday party, filled with wonderfully but totally useless stuff! Hurrrah! We set them up in a mini-playlist in the video… -
Bullying in South Korea
26 Jan 2012 | 11:46 amTo begin with, sorry for the constant disclaimers in these videos. We know the crowd of commenters here on our site are a lot more civil than different crowds on different sites, so these disclaimers aren’t really relevant to you lovely people It seems like you here understand that we’re just talking about our experiences, and not as Korea scholars. So, yay to you guise! We really like the discussions that happen on this page and really want to thank you for your contributions Anyhow, on with the show: we’re getting a lot of serious topics this month for our TL;DRs and today… -
What Makeup Does Martina Use & Wolverine Eye Shadow
25 Jan 2012 | 12:05 pmOkay! It’s my first eyeshadow tutorial and honestly, I’m so scared of the responses that I’ll get because I am in NO WAY trained to do make up. I’m sure you’ll be surprised to know that I only started wearing make up about two years ago in Korea. In fact, I was a real tomboy growing up. I was hanging out with all male friends, playing video games and sports, and breaking a million bones (actually more like, 5 to 6 bones: my poor stressed out parents!). The point is, I didn’t have time for make up, nor did I care for it. My longtime friends and family are… -
New Video Channel: Open the Happy!
25 Jan 2012 | 12:05 pmLet’s start this by saying Happy Lunar New Year everyone! Let’s continue this by saying…sorry for not WANKing this week! We tried. Really. We tried, but it was just not working. A lot of things are shut down for Seollal, and if we went anywhere it would be very dead and deserted. Also, getting there would be hellish. Our friend came to visit us from Wonju since he has time off for the holiday, and it’s usually a 2 hour drive away. Took him EIGHT FREAKING HOURS TO GET HERE! EIGHT! EEIIIGHHHHTT!! So, screw that. No WANK this week. We’ll be WANKing again next week… -
Sunny Hill Grasshopper Song – Kpop Music Mondays
23 Jan 2012 | 7:04 amThis week we’re reviewing a video that we’re really surprised made it to the top of the list. Great job Sunny Hill fans for voting in Sunny Hill’s “The Grasshopper Song” which we love! If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out here:To begin with, wow! We’re really happy to finally be reviewing Sunny Hill. We spoke about them before in our K Crunch, but that was only in passing. We thought that they weren’t really popular enough to get voted in. Boy were we wrong! Sure, it wasn’t like a Big Bang overload crashing our site, but Sunny Hill…

Random pictures, part 56
20 Jan 2012 | 5:00 pmCISK note: As always, ‘Random Pictures’ posts show off some interesting / quirky pictures that didn’t fit in any other post. Review: “Seoul Metro Project”
19 Jan 2012 | 5:00 pmEdited by Flash Parker in collaboration with the Seoul Photo Club, the moniker ’Seoul Metro Project’ is slightly vague, yet perfectly appropriate. 100 years from now (assuming future computers can read PDF’s and that the human race survives that long), the book will live as a tangible time capsule of the life and times of…This is just the start of the post!
