    The Grand Narrative

  • The Korean Media’s War on Women (and Men)

    James Turnbull
    14 May 2012 | 6:15 am
Via 10 Confessions, here is a short but quite rare “expo on the focus of the mass media and internet news sites on superficial looks of the entertainers in the industry, and how this trend needs to change.” Sorry that it’s all in Korean, but 10 Confessions provides a good (English) description of it, and it’s the least I can do to pass on the videos themselves (especially after spending half an hour looking for them!). To see the segment, jump ahead to 2:30 in the first video. It lasts until 4:10 in the second. Filed under: Body Image, Boy Bands, Cosmetic Surgery,…

  • Quick Hit: Is There STILL a Stigma Against Lingerie Modeling in Korea?

    James Turnbull
    10 May 2012 | 8:22 am
(Source; edited) Whenever I give lectures about Korean advertising, I always try to stress how quickly it’s changing. As both a reflection and driver of changes in Korean society itself, it’s one of the reasons why studying it is so interesting. Who can believe, for instance, that the first kiss in a Korean ad was as recently as 2009? So, next Monday I was going to mention that one reason you used to see so few Korean women modeling lingerie was because many pornography actors used to do it, giving it a certain stigma (and in turn sustaining stereotypes about the foreign,…
  • Public Lecture: “Sex and Gender Stereotypes in Korean Advertising”

    James Turnbull
    8 May 2012 | 5:39 am
(Source; edited from original) Apologies for the continued slow posting everyone, but I still have many good excuses, not least of which is my upstairs neighbor’s bathroom virtually exploding last night, suddenly sending torrents of water down the wall next to my computer as I typed on it (seriously, I was lucky I wasn’t electrocuted). On the plus side though, I’m happy to report that one of the guest lectures I’m doing is open to the public for a change, albeit at a terrible time, and that everyone is more than welcome. Please see above for the details, and here…

(Sources: left, right; edited from originals) Whenever someone strips for the sake of drawing attention to some cause, usually my instant, gut reaction is to dismiss it as a crass stunt. Unless it’s for Slutwalk or FEMEN, then I’m just too suspicious of their real motives, especially if they’re not already famous. That’s why I didn’t cover this woman back in January, who wrote a message of support for jailed Naneum Ggomsuda (나는 꼼수다) podcaster Chung Bong-ju (정봉주) across her breasts; as while she was anonymous herself (ish), other men and women that…

Spent the weekend before last taking in Seoul’s five grand palaces for my latest Yonhap article. Those already familiar with Korea’s capital can attest that no visit to the city is complete without a walk through at least one of them. Pummeled to near ruin during the Japanese invasion (1592-98) and colonial occupation (1910-45), they represent remarkable architectural achievement and the relentless resilience the nation still prides itself upon to this day. All five have undergone significant restoration in recent years. Due to their relatively close proximity to each other (they…

I love street food. One of my new favourite food alleyways in Seoul is Geumcheon Market. It’s a great place to sample all sorts of traditional Korean dishes. The restaurants and bars are sandwiched together along the strip so you don’t have to hop very far to the next venue. I started eating here a lot after I moved north of the river to Seochon-dong. The food is excellent and affordable. There’s this fantastic mandu (traditional Korean dumpling) snack restaurant called 손만두 분식 that’s been in business for ten years. 6 May 2012 | 10:11 am
Last week Korea joined the rest of the civilised world. My old foes the Korea Communication Commission (KCC) have allowed the sale of mobile phones by entities other than the three telcos - SK Telecom, KT and LG+. Consumers are now able to buy phones from the likes of Lotte and Shinsaegae department stores, independent retailers and of course the Internet. The rationale behind the decision is two fold - firstly opening the market should see consumers have access to cheaper phones . (Notwithstanding the price fixing that Samsung and various telcos were found guilty of earlier in the year)…

  • Japan, Slow Boat To

    16 May 2012 | 2:46 am
I took the Pukwan Ferry from Busan to Shimonoseki, Jaan. The cost was 79,000 W basic fare, but the upgrade to a first class cabin by myself, instead of sleeping on the floor with a half-dozen other people, cost 50,000 W, and was worth every penny. Here's my cabin, small but adequate: The boat was nice enough though not luxurious, and had a "casino" aka game room. Signage was Korean and Japanese, but the vending machines were Japanese, the restaurant used the pick a number and pay into the vending machine system, and payment was Yen-only. After arriving at the ferry landing in Shimonoseki, one…

Yesterday was May 1st, the official date when most restaurants and cafes set out their patio furniture. Of course, some places do this when the weather begins to turn nice, but Korean orthodoxy is a strong bronc to buck. In fact, the Deungchon Caffe Bene tells me that, even though they have their very own patio repleat with lampposts and balusters, they won't be setting tables outside ever again. Why not? Haven't got a clue, as my Korean was not up to the task, and the manager's English, ditto. Anyway, yesterday, I noticed my Chicken Mania franchise washing down the patio furniture, so this…

I Have the Right to Destroy Myself by Kim Young-ha - There is a lot of sex in this novel, nost of it unfulfilling--a literary device to represent the unfulfilling lives of the characters. The shadowy, unnamed narrator of the tale helps people commit suicide; no blood on his hands, just advice. He finds his clients through a simple want ad: "We listen to your problems." After a completed assignment, the narrator rewards himself with a trip abroad, and so he is in Vienna, then Venice as the story of two brothers, C. amd K. play out with their unfulfilled love interests, Mimi and the girl who…

Your visit to the Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival begins at the National Assembly station on Line 9. Signs helpfully direct you to the correct exit. When you come out, cross the main road and turn right, proceeding east to Yunjungno, the Japanese cherry tree-lined boulevard that sweeps around the National Assembly building. The beginning of the road is sealed off with a selection of floral displays (that's a map of Korea behind me). Today's was a crisp, bright morning, and I arrived before the crowds got too thick. Sadly, the festival calendar this year arrived before the cherry blossomes got…

There was a small piece in one of the Qingdao newspapers the other day about Chinese characters that are commonly written with incorrect stroke orders. I can’t remember which paper now, unfortunately, but I’ve listed the characters and their correct stroke orders here. The article was aimed at Chinese readers, not foreign learners, so it was interesting to see what native speakers consider correct and incorrect. 1. 方 (fāng) How most people write it:How it should be written: Yep, that ㇆ stroke comes before the 丿. I made a big discovery about typing Chinese the other day. I use pinyin input to type hanzi (despite singing the praises of Wubi), and up till now have been typing out each pinyin syllable in full. There is actually a faster way. You may have noticed that most pinyin input systems have an option called “allow incomplete pinyin” or something similar. • North Korea Loses its Place Atop the World’s Most Censured Nation’s Lists

    Chad O'Carroll
    15 May 2012 | 9:24 am
By Chad O’Carroll Last week the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) released a report which put Eritrea as the world’s leading censor of the media.  Eritrea sat on top of a list of ten countries which CPJ said had “dictatorial controls” on domestic media, followed closely by North Korea, Syria and Iran.  North Korea, which was long regarded as worse than Eritrea when it came to press freedom, seems to have improved its standing since the CJP’s last report in 2006. The improvement is also reflected in the work of Reporters Without Borders, who now rank North Korea as second to…
  • The Future of Global Korea

By Sarah K. Yun Since his inauguration in 2008, President Lee Myung-bak has promoted a “Global Korea” policy for Korea to be a more active and responsible member of the international community. However, with the upcoming presidential election and potential pendulum swing in South Korea’s leadership, what is the future of Korea’s growing global leadership role? With the U.S.-ROK alliance as the bedrock of its growing global presence and the “Global Korea” policy, Korea has pushed for improved and active bilateral relations across the world. Korea has not only solidified relations…
  • Five Issues to Consider for a Korean FTA with China

    Troy Stangarone
    2 May 2012 | 2:43 pm
By Troy Stangarone On May 2, Korea and China announced that they would begin talks on a bilateral free trade agreement. In many ways, this is a significant step in bilateral relations between Korea and China. The two countries only formally established relations in 1992, and in two short decades the relationship has blossomed on an economic level. In 1992, Korea and China did very little trade with each other, but today China is Korea’s largest trading partner surpassing the United States, Japan, and the European Union by wide margins. A Korea-China FTA would link Korea with its largest…

By Caryn Fisher The ongoing trial of Anders Behring Breivik, the alleged mass killer from Norway who is undergoing trial for the murder of 77 people, reopens the concept of a link between violent video games and acts of violence in real life. During his trial, Breivik stated that he used the game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” as shooting practice prior to the incident and had in the past spent time playing “World of Warcraft” for up to 16 hours a day. Although various studies and recent articles by Forbes and Reuters agree that there is no correlation between violent video games…
