  • Have you read "Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar"?

    31 Oct 2009 | 11:14 pm
It cost me an arm and a leg (72,000 won), but I bought Edwin G. Pulleyblank's book, "Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar." When it first arrived, I thought I had been ripped off because it was only a flimsy, little 206-page book, including Contents and Index pages. It did not look like it was worth 72,000 won, which is the most I have ever paid for any book, but after reading the first forty pages, I have changed my mind. It was a good investment.Though the book is not that well written or organized, it is crammed full of short-and-sweet grammar rules with one or two example sentences for…

    23 Oct 2009 | 11:52 pm
Yesterday, I bought a Korean book entitled "이이화의 한문 공부," which teaches the basics of classical Chinese writing. I bought the book not only because it was the only book in the store that taught the basics of classical Chinese, but also because it looked pretty good, at least in the store. However, after getting it home and reading more of it, I noticed a few problems. One of the problems with the book is that it assumes the reader already knows the Korean pronunciations for the Chinese characters used in many of the book's example sentences. In other words, the book gives you…

  • Was 之 (지) used to make causative verbs?

    14 Oct 2009 | 8:55 am
According to THIS WEB PAGE, the Chinese character 來 (내) was used in classical Chinese to mean, "[He] comes," and 來之 (내지) was used to mean, "[He] makes him come." In other words, the 之 (지) seems to have made "to come" (來) into a causative verb. In classical Chinese, was 之 sometimes used to make causative verbs?I am curious because I want to know if the following translation is correct:A temple ( gave ( [us] rice cake (餠), tea (茶), rice gruel (粥) and soy sauce (醬) and had us eat them.Does the 之 (지) change 食 (식) from "to eat" to "to have someone eat" (…
  • What's the problem with "뭐가 불만이냐"

    10 Oct 2009 | 4:21 am
뭐가 불만이냐 means "What's your problem" or "What's your complaint." It is a low form that is usually used among friends. If you use it with someone who is not your friend, you are asking for a fight. The problem with the expression is that 뭐가, strickly speaking, is an incorrect construction since 뭐 is a contraction of 무엇, so it would be like saying 무엇가, which is incorrect. The correct contraction for 무엇이 is 뭬. However, since few Koreans say "뭬 불만이냐," you could just drop the subject marker and say, "뭐 불만이냐." I think I will try to use 뭬.The…

Everyone is talking about it and I thought I would join the flock. Epik Highs Tablo has finally tied the knot with his girlfriend and mother of his coming child Kang HyeJung! I love this shot I want that cake Congratulations to the couple who have already headed off for their honeymoon! They look sincerely happy and I wish them the best of luck! As usual a celebrity wedding is a star studded event and peoples outfits make you wonder if they think Weddings are a casual event, but this year I picked out one outfit that made me worried for a talented celeb. I was kidding before when I said that…

That CL was never really born a human being. This photo shoot has been out for a while but I will not pass up an opportunity to critique it. For “W” magazine the 2NE1 girls were made to dress up in a “gangster” theme, although it’s obvious only one person really looked at home with the “weaponry” it didn’t make things any less interesting for the group as a whole. My favorite of the shoot, CL of course. With all that major Photo shop I thought she was Hyori. Now, tell me you don’t see a very important part of the human body missing? It…

I’m sure a lot of you know about the Wonder Girls latest great Success with entering the BillBoard Charts with their year round (never dying) International Hit “Nobody”. Well, Congratulations to them firstly, it is an amazing feat since they’ve done more than most K-Crossovers over the last few years. JYP held a press conference for the girls last week in Seoul and mentioned how they will be concentrating on the Western World with the Wonders and will not be further promoting in Korea. Since I prefer them in Korea it’s a darn shame, nonetheless there was…

Or better yet, what is your MAMA? The Mnet Asian Music Awards. After the sudden and somewhat shocking announcement that the MKMFs were coming to a close after their 10 year anniversary celebration last year, many people were left wondering what would take the place of the dodgy but youth representative end of year Award show. It had been full of plenty of controversies over the years, my favorite, Lee MinWoo throwing a tantrum and leaving JYP to stand on stage looking like a lonely freak show act (or more accurately have that performance cancelled, I prefer my turn of events albeit…

    20 Oct 2009 | 11:40 am
Something happened last week that I had thought would totally never happen. Nevertheless it did. Keep in mind last week was only the second week of October. Also keep in mind that October is the fall. As it is fall, leaves turn color, people bundle up(a bit,)and we use adjectives like; fresh, brisk, and cool. We normally stagger out of bed and peer at the frosty air greeting us before you journey out into the post summer rain on the way to work. Despite this, last week these things we all expect didn't happen. Watch the video and find out what really happened!

    21 Sep 2009 | 4:33 am
Well, I've been in the business of keeping a positive attitude, whilst saying nice things about people and places for just over a year now. I have also tried to make the most of my paltry photography skills to show some of what I have seen around the the globe to show you that the world is truly a friendly place, and deserves to be enjoyed more. Recently, I have noticed that I have had about 5000 visitors. So to those people, thanks and keep coming back. Interestingly, this will also be my 50th post. So if you're a numbers person, that makes it a tidy 100 people per posting. Not a bad gig.
  • What's Burning?

    12 Sep 2009 | 4:45 am
One of my good pals in Warsaw, Mohamed, who is from Iran, told me that it is forbidden to make outdoor fires in Iran. It's ironic, since he and his other Iranian mates in Warsaw like nothing more than going to various parks in Warsaw and building gargantuan, roasting fires for grilling. Despite the fact that many Poles(Warsawians included,) like to partake in outdoor grilling adventures, I have also heard that it is in fact quite popular to have grilled food with fires in Iran as well. Even though it's 'illegal' in Iran, it's a pastime partook by most law abiding Iranians. Moreover, even…

So as most of you dear readers (all five of you,) probably know, last month I went home to the grand ole USA for a sojourn of a month to see family, friends, and partake in a collection of my favorite cultural revelries like; eating Mexican food and burgers, and watching baseball. Yes indeed, I experienced it all. Like all visits out west in the summer I enjoyed the same comforts of home I always expect; great heat, coastal fogs, barbecues, micro-brews, sipping coffee on sidewalk benches of Berkeley coffee-houses, sandwiches, stunning landscapes, bustling cities, cheap clothing, sleeping on…

Regardless, whatever it is, the fact is that I am an American living abroad, and have done so for the last six years or so. • An Early Morning In Laos

    29 Oct 2009 | 7:47 pm
As suggested by our travel guide, we woke at dawn and offered alms to the many monks of Luang Prabang. Yes, we felt like the tourists that we are, but it was a unique experience and a serene morning. We then found a market on a side street. The smell of herbs, particularly something resembling dill, was fresh in the air.Breakfast was a muddy Lao-style coffee with a thick bed of condensed milk, some fried dough, and some coconut-rice-thing wrapped up in a leaf. (Plastic spoons included, womp womp.)

  • Bangkok To Vientiane By Train

    28 Oct 2009 | 7:28 pm
We took an overnight train from Bangkok to Vientiane, crossing the Mekong, and arriving four hours late. At lunchtime we had our first genuine Lao meal: beef larp with sticky rice.Afterwards, we took a stroll in area and found a school. Uniformed children were waiting and playing in the yard. Of course I took photos, and usually this is a one-way assault, but this time they shot right back -- with a Nintendo DS no less. Shenanigans ensued and I quickly found myself winded and sweaty from the horsing around. We rented bikes and spent the rest of the day exploring the quite capital of Laos.

  • Winter Is Coming

    2 Nov 2009 | 10:09 am
Bicycles on the Subway! It's so hard to believe that it has been about two months since I returned to Korea. I've been busy and have done a lot since I got back, but I still can't seem to figure where my time has gone. It feels like it should still be summer, but despite my unwillingness to accept the reality, winter is coming on us quickly. And it is only now that I realize how much I hate Korean winter.I've been meaning to update for quite a while now. I don't know what my problem has been, but I'm starting to feel like this blog is slowly dying. I've been lazy, sick (which is why this post…
  • 'He is Die'

    22 Oct 2009 | 8:18 am
...so goes the common response that I get 95% of the time when a student is absent or late from class and I ask everyone else, "Where is -----?" I guess they think it's pretty funny to constantly kill their peers in their minds and see them miraculously resurrect themselves ten minutes later, walking through the door, fifteen minutes late.***Speaking of people who didn't die, my good friend B recently came down with something wicked. More than likely, he had the dreaded H1N1 (sounds like the name of a new K-pop girl group) and recovered just fine. We'll never know for sure, however, since he…

  • Olleh!

    15 Oct 2009 | 1:58 am
'Olleh.' Apparently the well-know Spanish language interjection 'Olé' is actually 'Hello' spelled backwards. At least that's what I've been told many, many times from people who have put a little too much interest in the (not so new) cellphone advertisements. It's really nothing new. Another cultural phenomenon started by a cellphone company. It's not the first time this has happened since I've been here, and it certainly won't be the last. But for the time being, I have to constantly listen to my students joyfully should 'Olleh!' (not 'Olé!) every time something happens that they like.

    10 Oct 2009 | 10:26 pm
Hey everyone. Again, sorry that it seems like I've been updating less and less often these days. Life is just breezing by, and I think (now that I'm living in Seoul) I'm spending less time at home than ever before. It's good. It's relaxing, and it's fun. But I really hope that it doesn't mean that this blog will slowly fade off into the dead blogsphere.Anyway, as I've hinted before, things are much better this week than they were last. Going to Taiwan was a good experience for me, even though it did get a bit lonely at times. But spending time alone isn't always a bad thing, either. I just…

And then he proceeded to dance out of the room backwards. And then just today, I was in my office at my desk, with my headphones on, listening to music. Now that our second contract year has officially started, we'll starting living over the weather that we have experienced here, and I have to say... fall was probably the best! So, I've had tons of issues with my vice principle. I'm sure I've mentioned some of them before. But it's usually just things like, my co teacher will tell me that I'm supposed to get something, like a day off or be able to go home early or something, and then she'll tell me, "oh, the vice principle decided that you shouldn't be able to do that." So, I've never really been sure if she's really intentionally mean, or if it's just that I can't talk to her directly, so I don't get a full explanation. But, I have heard other teachers mention that they don't like her. For example, my head teacher…

  • That's it, I'm definitely not in Korea anymore.

    4 Nov 2009 | 9:32 pm
I didn't have any classes today. Obviously I've been internet browsing all day, planning a vacation or two, checking on jobs post-Korea, figuring out if I should go home this vacation or next and watching copious amounts of TV. Oh, and I finished a book too. I'm the master multi-tasker. I could have been working on lesson planning but I figure since I'm planned up till the end next semester, I shouldn't bother. So, as I was in my classroom all day, alone, I didn't see any of the students in the school. I heard them, but didn't see then. And then I went to lunch. School lunches in Korea are…

I'm so confused today. I felt like I was in a new world. Surely not in Korea anymore. There were five students missing from my first class. Four from the next and another few in a later classs. I first assumed the worst. The punks were gobbled up by an earthquake in the middle of the night. They were kidnapped by aliens. Having punks absent from school was a sure sign that we'd entered the twilight zone.I nearly passed out when I found out why they were gone. They had colds or even the swine flu. Huh? They were sick and were being told to stay home? This never happens. Last week I had a…

    1 Nov 2009 | 3:22 am
I'm prone to embarrassing moments no matter where I live. It seems that those moments that happen in a foreign country are more pronounced because everyone watches. Except everyone laughs at me and I'm never quite sure why.I got a wild hair for some ice cream and decided that Baskin Robbins was the only place to satisfy this want. I have no idea why. It was cold and windy and I mistakenly went out with no jacket or socks. But that's not the embarrassing moment.I ordered my ice cream; a pint of pumpkin cheesecake. I figured that would last me a week. Or an hour, depending on any number of…

These included some random Korea moment shots, ajumma shots, pictures of my school and students, the beautiful fall weather, 100 pictures of me trying earnestly not to through the victory sign (most attempts were utter failures). In all, I was excited to start posting with pictures again.I have too much free time this week because my students are taking exams so I figured it would be the perfect time to skim through pictures and…

Family for me doesn't consist of Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister. It's a couple moms, a couple dads, a couple of sisters, a couple of brothers, nearly a dozen grandparents, scores of cousins, and all those that got picked up along the way for the ride.Small towns and big families sort of go hand in hand. Both of them have one very important trait in common; people in each can talk your head off. You can't do anything without someone else knowing. I used to hate…

Large sections of the fair devoted to booths on how Korea is planning on dealing with nuclear waste and the gas company on one side of the fair. Tourist information booths for different countries and regions of Korea on the other. The Gem of the fair was a section filled with booths selling all kinds of food from around the world. • Appreciating the Korean blackout.

    5 Nov 2009 | 4:15 am
Here's an impressive site dedicated to the Korean blackout. Hailing from a nation where you are promptly asked or forced to leave an establishment when you have a bit too much to drink, and are ticketed or arrested if you so much as stumble under the influence in public, I found it pretty spectacular the Koreans are allowed to get absolutely shithammered to the point of not being able to physically support themselves several nights a week. As most of you visiting this page have probably seen first-hand, these people usually end up in one of two-places: the shoulders of their buddies, or…

( Source ) Granted, Marxism might not be the first thing one thinks of when one sees Lee Hyori’s navel. But as it turns out, it’s a perfect fit. If you’ll bear with me for a moment, once a market is saturated, I learned at university in New Zealand, there is a inherent tendency for a company’s rate of profit to fall. But this can be offset by re-marketing and/or making new varieties of the original product, and accordingly my lecturer posited the plethora of varieties of Coca-Cola available in the U.S. as a reflection of the greater capitalistic development of its…

( Source ) With apologies to those readers that have come to expect more serious posts on this blog, but I thought this was an exceptionally cute picture of UEE (유이)! Yes, even I need to let my hair down on occasion. And of course I’m well aware that it’s part and parcel of Lotte’s marketing of its new Cheoum Cheoreom Cool (처음처럼 쿨) brand of soju to women, which strangely uses the sexual availability of, well, women as its main theme, and that both it and others in the series have been extensively photoshopped. Despite her resulting rather alien-looking legs though,…

( Source ) For the fledgling movie reviewer, revealing one’s inexperience with cinema is never a wise move. And adding that this inexperience stems from an at best indifferent, at worst active dislike of the subject? Positively suicidal, at least in terms of becoming known as an authority on it. Fortunately however, that is not my aim with this post. Rather, it marks the first of many movie reviews I’ll write as I personally struggle to see Korean cinema in a new light from now on, hopefully providing readers with an entertaining and informative guide in the process. ( Source: realistic dreamer ) A quick survey on contraception use in Korea that was on the front page of Yahoo! Korea recently. Unfortunately, not only is there no information about the methodology used, but the accompanying article is rather short, and states the obvious several times. One wonders what the point of it was. I feel certain that it was not intended to be simply sensationalist though, as if it was then presumably it would have attracted more than 11 comments from Korea’s infamous netizens. And however dubious, its results are broadly similar to those of more reliable…

    22 Oct 2009 | 10:18 pm
It’s official: from now on, I’ll be using Korean-language sources on gender and sexuality here just as much as English ones. Partially, this is simply to maintain and improve my Korean ability, which I’ve sorely neglected since starting a new job back in July. But the main reason is that not only can foreign-language commentary on any subject quickly become out of date, it also makes one reliant on the views of those Koreans fluent in English, which are not necessarily reflective of Koreans as a whole. Consider the following by sociologist Yoshio Sugimoto for instance. He is…

I’m getting the reputation as a curmudgeon when it comes to Korean efforts to promote Korean food abroad.  But that’s only because the economics guy heading up the Ag Ministry who thinks he knows about food and what non-Koreans like has come up with embarrassingly boneheaded ideas and has poured ungodly amounts of money into them. Topoki? Yet one restaurant is showing some promise.  Cafe Sobahn, a high concept bibimbap/coffeeshop, was created to update the Korean classic and internationalize it.  Of course, I was highly skeptical. • #56 The Freezer

    12 Oct 2009 | 5:09 pm
Korean Moms love freezing things. They believe that anything can be frozen. I once came home after school and threw open the freezer in search of a snack, only to find a giant ass furry paw perched nonchalantly inside. Yes. You heard me right. A. Paw. PETA would have died, then resurrected, only to die again. It belonged to a bear and was later made into a soup, but that's another story
  • #55 Being Green

    18 Sep 2009 | 5:14 pm
Korean Moms love being green, but they do not know they are being green. All they know is that they saved 50 cents on their last heating bill by keeping the house at a comfortable 49 degrees. You lost feeling in your toes? Complain and risk the debilitating power of the Stank Eye (see #5) or just put on some extra socks with sandals like a good Korean kid. Korean Moms invented

  • #54 Chinese/Korean Herbal Medicine

    11 Feb 2009 | 5:37 pm
Korean Moms love Korean/Chinese Herbal Medicine. Better known as Hahn-Yahk. If they could carry it around in a flask like a G, whipping it out for a swig every once in while, they would. Vodka and Tequila shots have nothing on the potency of Hahn-Yahk. Its mere stench can make a grown man cry or Clay Aiken grow chest hair. What is it you ask? Nobody really knows. We may have speculations, but we

    31 Oct 2009 | 9:30 pm
At school, I watched "Nightmare before Christmas" with my homeroom kids and gave candies out! Happy Halloween everyone! Then I headed Apgujeong. I got a haircut too. New haircut and new tango shoes!!After the classes, we (Sohyun, Sophie and me) headed for Ritz-Carlton Hotel for a Halloween party!I liked the Halloween decorations and liked the cocktail there, but we ended up with a huge bill for such a light & quiet party.A memorable night indeed. hmm.

  • A Scooter Tour of Bucheon, Korea

    Eat Your Kimchi
    1 Nov 2009 | 1:26 am
ShareQuite a while ago, we gave you a tour of Jung Ang Park on our bikes. Times have changed since then, and we've moved on to bigger and better things. Now we have a scooter and can ride a lot further (with a lot less energy), and our camera doesn't suck as terribly as before! So, this time, we drove around the streets of Bucheon, Korea on our scooters and filmed the whole deal, including any important landmarks along the way. Sure, we couldn't film ALL of Bucheon, but you'll see the parts we know and are familiar with. So check out what our city looks like! Click on the picture above for…

    Eat Your Kimchi
    12 Oct 2009 | 7:40 pm
ShareWe're happy that we found this place, because this is what we kind of expected Korea to be like before we got here: marketplaces with bad lighting and fresh produce, fresh fish, and meat cut right in front of you, vendors yelling for your attention, and random sock stores that don't seem to fit in with the rest of the place. Instead, we're surrounded by shopping malls and megamarts - in our part of Bucheon, at least - so we like to make it down to Bucheon's Sang Dong Market every once in a while. They quite possibly make our favorite Man Du (dumplings) and Don Kat Su (shnitzel) in our…

ShareRecently, our Spudgy dislocated his knee. It was a terrible experience: he lifted his leg to pee, and - being the gimpy dog that he is - fell over in agony. He was screaming and howling, and it broke our hearts. We hopped in a taxi and went to Seoul immediately. Now, we could have gone to a vet in Bucheon in a fraction of the time it took us to get to Seoul, but we knew that Spudgy would get the best care at Mari Animal Hospital. They're located in the Hongdae area, and we've been going to them from the beginning with Spudgy. Their English is great, which makes taking care of Spudgy so…

Share Next week we're going to be giving another presentation for the Gepik Orientation, so here's a video in the spirit of helping teachers. Here's another video of a lesson we do in a Korean Middle School Class. Like the last Battleship lesson, this is a class where the teacher does minimal talking and the students practice their English instead. It was a really fun class, so we'd highly recommend you try it out in your schools. As well, it's highly customizable, so you can make the questions fit whatever level your students are at. All of the materials in this lesson, including Powerpoints…
  • What You Should Pack to Korea

    4 Sep 2009 | 7:25 am
Share Planning on coming to Korea? What are you going to bring with you in your suitcase? Surely by now you've heard stories, about what Korea has or does not have, but as we discovered, a lot of those were just rumors. Since we've been in Korea for well over a year now, we can squash those rumors. After visiting Canada for summer vacation, we prepared "a what to pack" and "what not to bother packing" video. Unfortunately, the video could not cover everything, because it would be far too long, so this post will serve as the exclusive extras list of things you must pack to Korea. So click on…

the bathroom leak that supposedly wasn’t that big of a problem. yeah, big fucking problem.  I told my husband that the leak is more noticeable when the upstairs people are using their water in their bathroom.  The fucking repair guy decided that it wasn’t that big of a deal. This morning I thought that I could smell burning … of something but hoped that it was just from outside. The pouring water coming from the light fixture in the middle of the bathroom ceiling – a precursor to the inventible collapse of the bathroom ceiling. I fucking hate this country and their…

Yup, we’re going to crash a wedding tomorrow.  It’s amazing how you can crash weddings here and no one bats an eye.  I’m not up on my urban slang enough to know if this truly counts as crashing but it’s as close as I want it to be.  We’ve basically settled on having our wedding ceremony at his alma mater and so the wedding hall has said that we can come watch someone else’s wedding and then eat the food there.  I’m sure it won’t be too distracting to see the white girl in the back of the room taking notes. • November Cancelled due to Swine Flu Fears

    26 Oct 2009 | 11:38 pm
With increasing reports of Swine Flu afflictions, the Korean government has decided to cancel the entire month of November."We figure if we just skip straight to December, those thirty days'll be enough time for everyone in Korea with Swine Flu to get over it."Some schools and institutions are even getting a head start on the cancellation by cancelling Hallowe'en parties on the 31st of October. Instead, schools will have regular class days, putting students into contact with the same students and teachers they'd be contacting during a Hallowe'en parties, but without costumes, which are…
  • Yuna Kim's Mother Reaches Top Of Korean Mother Bragging Rights Ranking

    20 Oct 2009 | 6:38 pm
After setting a world record and winning the "Tropii Elik Pompadeu," Yuna Kim, or Kim Yuna's mother Park Mee-hee has moved past Ban Ki-moon's mother for the Koreawide Lead in the Korea Mother's Bragging Rights Rankings (KMBRR).The Korea Mother's Bragging Rights Rankings are a little-known rating, outside of Korean Mothers: it is scored, basically, by imagining the mother of every Korean sitting in an after-church tea together, and asking the question, "Who would have to stand up and get whom another plate of banchan, and who would be able to say 'Get it your own damn self, you harpy mother of…
  • A Game of "Does it Exist" with World Authority Archaeologist

    18 Oct 2009 | 7:54 am
That's right. Logic demigod David Thiessen, aka The Archaeologist, has assured us all that racism does not exist in Korea, because it does not exist either in the human genome, nor in the bible. In a piece of brilliant analysis and exposition in The Korea Times, Mr. Thiessen has demonstrated that The Word Of God, and The Human Genome, are the only authoritative places to find proof of whether a thing exists or not. Logicians are now referring to this standard of existence as "Archaeologist's Razor" similar to Occam's Razor for its effectiveness in getting to the heart of logical discourse.

I turned 30 yesterday. Nothing special happened. I don't feel any different, or in any type of crisis, so that's a relief. My mom, sister, and I just went out for dinner. I did realize something last night, though: nearly all of my friends are in Korea. I have hardly any friends here in Ontario anymore. I guess this is natural after spending seven plus years overseas. It seems I need my crafting time as much as I need sleep. If I don't get it, I get restless. So I try to do a little bit every day, even if I just do a few stitches/rows/rounds. I've been back on a doily kick. I don't know why…
  • Halloween

    1 Nov 2009 | 7:33 am
We had an uneventful Halloween this year with fewer kids than usual. There were high wind warnings yesterday, so the weather wasn't that great. H1N1 in the news and people being sick probably accounted for more kids staying in. That means there's more candy left over for us though. Grace was into the candy, too, but in the end, decided that the Smarties worked better as rattles.A week until we depart for Korea if all goes smoothly. I'm waiting on the WHO to decide whether infants actually do need the second H1N1 booster. She had a half dose last Thursday. If she does need the second, we may…
  • Yay Grace!

    20 Oct 2009 | 12:08 pm
I'm happy to report that Grace's sleep has really improved this last month. She sleeps for 5-6 hour stretches on average (she slept a 10 hour stretch the other night), and I'm sure she will continue to improve. Not only is this good for me, but I've noticed that she seems better off, too. She is in a better mood and can stay up longer in the mornings. She used to need to go down for a nap very soon after getting up, but now she can go about a 3 1/2 hour stretch 'til that morning nap. This is really good. I'm so relieved. I hope this is the end of really boring blog posts about sleep. You'd…

Fall is definitely here. A lovely 10 degrees and sunny on Sunday meant a good day for photos! We also had our Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday.Grace and I are doing well. I'm still working hard to complete two books by the end of October (can it be done? I'll try...), and Grace is working hard on improving her sleep. She's doing well. She is not getting me up as often. The other night she left from 8:30pm til 5am. That was pretty long and not the usual, but I am confident those long stretches will become more frequent. Lots in store in the coming weeks. Trip to Buffalo tomorrow, going to a…

    15 Sep 2009 | 9:00 pm
I have been taking a very much needed internet break these past 5 weeks. It's actually been nice to be away from the computer and be communicating with family and friends, shopping, eating, and even relaxing. The only bad part is that I have not been keeping up with my friends back in Korea or keeping up my blog. I have no idea what's going on with my many real-life, blogger, and facebook friends.I will try to write an update post sometime soon. I have extended my ticket to November 7th so that I can write two books while staying here with my parents. Time for bed!

Surprise. Now, I have no problem with anyone observing my class, anytime. I'm not going to change my lesson plan, or anything like that. However, knowing in advance, I would be sure to dress less casually--best foot forward and all that. 1 Nov 2009 | 12:11 am
Well, it turned really cold all of a sudden here in my Patch of Seoul; today's high temperature was 54 F, and the low tomorrow is expected to be 31 F, with a high of 40. Brisk, to say the least. It was rainy all day yesterday, until about 7 PM; after it stopped, the temperature started dropping. Also, the ghosts, ghouls and other scary creatures started appearing--no, Halloween isn't popular in Korea (yet), I was in Itaewon, Seoul's stand-in for the USA. I had dinner with Karen, after which we made our way to a place called The Loft on the promise of free drinks for the ladies. Andy and Jisun…

    29 Oct 2009 | 5:01 am
I spent the better part of the morning at Mok-dong Hospital (my Thursday schedule gives me free periods from 10:30 to 2:10). Never fear: me, flu? No! I was there to get a medical exam as required biennially by my school--totally different than the medical exam required by SMOE for my contract renewal back in early August. In addition to a standard work-up, employees in my age group have to be tested for gastric cancer. I assume that next time it will be for a different cancer. The regular check-up is free, but the public health insurance only covers 80% of the cancer thing. Miss Lee was so…
  • New Flu Review

    28 Oct 2009 | 5:32 am
I haven't written much about the A-H1N1 influenza situation because, from my perspective, there isn't much to write about. Every year or three, a new, virulent strain of 'flu comes along, and health authorities everywhere scare everyone, try to calm everyone down, then scare them some more by their oscillating predictions of its pandemic possibilities. Occasionally, they actually manage to provide a beneficial vaccine. So has it been in 2009. Initially called 'swine flu', Korea has taken to calling it 'new flu'--though of course each year's strain is new--and reminding everyone about hand…
