Contrary to conciliatory New Year's Day messages, war rhetorics and artillery shells are being tossed across by both sides of Korea. Angered by the South Korean government's leaked emergency contingency plan for possible North Korean regime collapse, North Korean authorities have increased their warlike statements. On top of this, North Korea has fired artillely shells near the disputed sea border with South Korea, for which South Korea responded likewise. • Another Standoff in the Korean Peninsula Peace/Security Issue

    Korea Report
    19 Jan 2010 | 10:46 am
Looks like another standoff in the peace/security issue in the Korean Peninsula: North Korea demanded the lifting of sanctions and proposed a negotiation for a peace treaty to officially end the Korean War as prerequisites for rejoining the six-party talks on nuclear disarment, for which the U.S. and allies rejected, countering that North Korea should participate in the six-party talks first. All these issues have been aired before, but the parties still cannot agree on the format and approach towards meaningful resolution. The National Campaign to End the Korean War (based in North America)…

  • Another Disgraced Tycoon Gets Freed in South Korea

    Korea Report
    30 Dec 2009 | 10:36 am
It looks like it takes a "CEO President" (Lee Myung-bak of South Korea, who was a Hyundai executive) to pardon another ex-CEO (Lee Kun-hee of Samsung, photo), who was convicted of tax evasion and embezzlement. The given reason for this gesture was to boost South Korea's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, using Lee Kun-hee's membership (though suspended during his conviction) in the IOC. But this kind of special treatments for Korean jaebol (conglomerate) leaders brings back the fear of unchecked collusion and corruption between the government and the conglomerates -- something from South…

  • How do you say "elk" in Korean?

    3 Feb 2010 | 7:03 am
My dictionary says elk is 말코손바닥사슴. A deer with a horse's nose and hoofs?UPDATE: 말코손바닥사슴 is the Korean word for "moose," not elk. The word is descriptive since 말코 means "horse nose" and 손바닥 means "palm," which most likely refers to the palm-shaped antlers of the moose. 사슴 means "deer." Photo of a moose from WikipediaThe Korean word for elk seems to be 와피티사슴, which comes from the Korean transliteration of "wapiti" (와피티). Photo of an elk from WikipediaBy the way, can anyone count how many elk are in the following video?

  • Have you read "Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar"?

    31 Oct 2009 | 11:14 pm
It cost me an arm and a leg (72,000 won), but I bought Edwin G. Pulleyblank's book, "Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar." When it first arrived, I thought I had been ripped off because it was only a flimsy, little 206-page book, including Contents and Index pages. It did not look like it was worth 72,000 won, which is the most I have ever paid for any book, but after reading the first forty pages, I have changed my mind. It was a good investment.Though the book is not that well written or organized, it is crammed full of short-and-sweet grammar rules with one or two example sentences for…

I bought the book not only because it was the only book in the store that taught the basics of classical Chinese, but also because it looked pretty good, at least in the store. However, after getting it home and reading more of it, I noticed a few problems. One of the problems with the book is that it assumes the reader already knows the Korean pronunciations for the Chinese characters used in many of the book's example sentences. In other words, the book gives you…

Eventually, the whole world will be the stage for the USFK. This is to deal with issues that menace the security of the world.”  [USFK website] This has been long suspected but it appears the ultimate goal for USFK is to become a deployable force around the world much like the Marines on Okinawa currently are.

JYP Entertainment said, “Mimi had a truly memorable, once in a lifetime experience while living in the U.S. and touring over 50 cities. We support her decision to pursue an academic career at this time. We will also support Mimi if she chooses to return to singing after her academics are complete. In the meantime, she plans to frequent JYP facilities and continue her dance and vocal classes.” Mimi will remain with the Wonder Girls in…

Went to the another Anyang Halla hockey game this past weekend. It's the first one I've been to since sometime shortly after I got here, and it was a lot of fun. A 4-3 overtime victory for the home team, and a clinching of the top seed for the playoffs.Congratulations guys!***Saw my janitor-buddy again after work today for the first time since the school went on winter vacation and I shifted to my vacation work schedule.'Hey, you ready?''Yep, time to go home.''Okay. What's this?' (taking note of my beard and pointing to his face)'Oh, yeah.''Why?' (not the first time I have been questioned for…

Asia...the robot capital of the world, or so I have always been told. With new reports hitting the news on a seemingly daily basis about the newest technologies coming out of Tokyo, Seoul, or somewhere else in the Eastern hemisphere, one might expect to be overtaken by sensory overload of neon lights, robots, and people in space suits the minute they enter any of Asia's major international cities.Fortunately or unfortunately, that's a bit more science fiction than real life, though I have always been a bit surprised and slightly disappointed by how non-futuristic my time here has been…

Sure there are still at least six or seven other things that I could be doing right now, such as studying for my Korean class or practicing for my 단소 lesson tomorrow, but since I've been so busy lately and want to keep this blog active, I figured now is as good a time as ever to bring you up to speed. Campus A Low Hum 2010, this year was held in Bulls at an old abandoned school site. Three days of music, long lost friends, tents and parties. From 10am to 2am, there is constant, awesome music being played all over the place. The most novelty stage, though less effective in terms of sound was the pool. It was even more awesome when filled with balloons. One of my favourite, un-posed pictures EVER!So many great activities, art and exercise classes and general hanging out in the mostly sun.Best partying night for me was night two. Continuing my journey of my unseen New Zealand, I squeezed in the car with the band and we drove from Raglan, through Auckland and two hours north to Whangarei which was exciting because I had never been up this far.The reason I wanted to got to Whangarei, was to catch up with this fabulous character (who is still rocking in his Korean gears):Tom and I completely chilled out for two days at his family home - he showed me around his new dentist office at Whangarei hospital, took me up Parihaka hill, we walked along the harbour and took me to eat some delicious food. Here is his amazing dog Lulu…

It's pretty much a surfers paradise, and because I am not a surfer it is also a beach sitting, book reading paradise. Holly and I ate some delicious fish & chips wrapped in the Waikato Times and drank some delicious lemon & paerora on the water front, we then went over to the main beach and watched a most romantic sunset.I met up with Stu, who was mid way through the Julian Temple Band tour - to which he was being the sound man. • Thailand vacation - Day 7

    24 Jan 2010 | 6:20 am
We woke up early for our final day (Friday) because we were going to be picked up at 6:30 am for the Flight of the Gibbon adventure that we had signed up for. We packed up all of our things and checked out of our hotel before we left, but they said that we could leave our bags in their lobby until we came back later. The Flight of the Gibbon is also another fairly well known attraction. They showed us a TV show that had featured it, and it was supposedly voted the “best attraction in Chiang Mai”. It involved zip-lines strung from the tops of trees throughout the rain forests! It…
  • Thailand vacation - Day 5 and 6

    24 Jan 2010 | 6:16 am
The next morning (Wednesday), we woke up early to leave on a trekking tour. We climbed into a van that was full of people speaking various languages that we didn’t understand. We also noticed that we were the only people there that were under, like, forty. I thought that it was probably because there were also overnight two and three day tours, and there were also tours that included white water rafting, so I guess that we choose the “old people tour” that was just a single day trek and a calm bamboo raft ride. After a bit of a drive into the forest (during which one of the…

We arrived early in the morning (Monday), having gotten a little sleep, but not quite feeling like a new day should be starting just yet! So, we started to explore the city. The weather was perfect—a little cooler than in Bangkok, and there was far less traffic and people. We got breakfast at the first McDonalds we spotted, failed again to find a free wireless internet connection, and then pulled out our list of good hotels in the area. We started at the top of the list, and started asking around for where a certain street name, and were pointed in the right direction. We came to a few…

The 6 hours in the air from Seoul to Bangkok passed uneventfully. We arrived in Bangkok at the airport around 10:30pm (Saturday night), ready to find a bed. We exchanged some money, failed to find wireless, and then grabbed some hamburgers at an airport restaurant. After eating, we went outside to catch a taxi. There weren’t very many taxis, and we later found out that we should have gone to another place down stairs to catch a taxi, but we finally grabbed one. After telling him the name of our hotel, we got in. We had been told to be sure to get a taxi that runs the meter, because…

I went home over Christmas for a surprise visit and stayed for quite a while. Before I left, there were some things that happened at my school that made me sure I had no desire to come back. My old co-worker had a contract from Jan 1 to Dec 31. He did not use some of his vacation or sick days and made a deal with the school to allow him to leave a bit early so that he could be home for Christmas. They agreed. On his very last day in Korea, when he was supposed to be paid all of his final stuff, they told him that they had changed his contract to start March 1 so he was leaving before his…

I'm not sure if I should be ashamed about throwing snowballs at students. Now the snow has completely melted but I'm hoping for a white Christmas. The forecast says its unlikely. Dealing with the social and cultural politics of a public school here in the Land of the Morning Calm can be rough at times. The administration and I try to find middle ground but sometimes we fail and I want to poke them in the eyeballs. But I don't.One amazing thing about my particular school is the involvement of the parents. Moms and dads alike are there each and every day, not all of them but many. They help clean and decorate classes. Sometimes I leave work for the day and leave some student artwork or assignments on my desk and come the next morning to find that they've come in, tidied…

One of the drawbacks of working in Korea is that I have misplaced many things that are important to me. My quick wit is on hiatus, my conversation skills took a walk, and my vocabulary went on sabbatical. Many of us legal aliens groan about these things. We spend so much of our day in an environment where our language skills are limited to what our students know and are able to learn. We actively think and speak in simple sentences, we use hand gestures to help them understand (I can no longer say "no" without raising my arms in an X), and we limit our vocabularies to the basics. What I…

    26 Jan 2010 | 2:01 am
I love teaching winter and summer camp. The classes are small, the students are well behaved and want to learn, I'm able teach fun material that the students and I enjoy, there are no pesky co-teachers watching over me and constantly interrupting, and I'm done by noon. This past week the students had to create a superhero and write a short paragraph describing their superhero. We then glued all the superheroes and descriptions onto poster-board. Here is what they came up with (the 1st graders writing is much better than the 2nd graders).First Graders:Second Graders:(Click on the pictures to…

On Christmas day, I went out with other foreigners for a Christmas dinner, but that was it. I don't write "relevant to foreigners" or "among expatriates" because though we might all be called the same word in Korean, we're a diverse group of people. ( Source: RaySoda ) With apologies to teachers of Korean children everywhere, tired of their proclivity for repeating the nonsensical foreign words found in Korean advertisements, there is actually much to be admired in KT’s recent olleh (올레) campaign. For under the rubric da guraerul dweejeebeora (다 그래를 뒤집어라), or “turn the things that bug you on their heads,” it has a definite self-depreciating streak, poking fun at various groups of Koreans and their habits in a way that feels curiously similar to British humor. The author implies that most of them arose organically from the public’s interest in certain actors in Korean dramas, but of course it’s largely companies and the media that are constantly trying to create new consumer trends (read: new reasons for people to feel dissatisfied with themselves). Yet while most of these have no basis in reality, are essentially useless, and/or are so contrived as to be quickly…

    1 Feb 2010 | 7:24 pm
( Source ) Call me old-fashioned, but although music videos can have a huge effect on my enjoyment of songs, I still try to judge them on their own merits. By that criteria, all of Girls’ Generation’s hits have fallen flat for me, no matter how photogenic the girls are But then I found a remix of their latest hit Oh! by the Greek trance DJ “Ariea”, and I immediately fell in love with it. Like he says on his blog, he put a lot of work into it. And it shows. True, it’s actually the only one of his K-pop remixes that I like, that of Abracadabra…
  • The Dire Need for Sex Education in South Korea

    James Turnbull
    1 Feb 2010 | 6:26 am
( Source: Naver Movies ) As you probably suspected, only a very small percentage of Korean teenagers are having sex. The average age that they started though, was as young as 14, and that doesn’t just affect them academically. Or at least, that’s the take-away message of the news article below, which I was pleasantly surprised to see on the front page of Yahoo! Korea last week. Unfortunately it is rather sloppily written, raises more questions than answers, seems to ignore teenage prostitution and – in a typical irony – required age verification to search for it again…

  • The Eighth Day: Texas-style BBQ sauce with Tteokbokki

    Tammy
    9 Feb 2010 | 7:00 am
Posted by Tammy If Koreans are the kings (and queens) of Far-East Asian BBQ, then Texas reigns supreme as far as American BBQ is concerned. With heavy Spanish, Czech and German influences, Texas BBQ is bold and full of flavor. The Texan tradition of slow smoked BBQ is the opposite of the Korean quick grilling but the Texan method of BBQ forces the toughest cuts of beef to submit in tender submission. The traditional Korean way of making tteokbokki reminds many ex-pats of gnocchi’s chewey texture. Some Americans have an aversion to tteokbokki because of the texture of the noodles.

I’m always on the look out for new Korean food blogs, especially ones with unique angles.  A Frog in the Kitchen takes a French approach to Korean cuisine.  Written by French expat Tiffany Bernard in both English and Korean, the blog tackles a good bit of lifehacking (my new catchall word these days) by making French foods with Korean ingredients and then some.  She even makes a mold out of a Korean butter package so she can stack ratatouille in tower form and garnish it with a glorious strip of bacon.  Girl has mad knife skills, too. 8 Feb 2010 | 7:00 am
Today, I’m bringing tteokbokki to the new world, first stop in Mexico. Due to the labor-intensive nature of traditional Mexican mole sauces, I didn’t make this mole from scratch. The mole that Americans recognize is Mole Poblano. Wikipedia says, “Mole poblano is prepared with dried chili peppers (commonly ancho, pasilla, mulato and chipotle), ground nuts and/or seeds (almonds, indigenous peanuts, and/or sesame seeds), spices, Mexican chocolate (cacao ground with sugar and cinnamon and occasionally nuts), salt, and a variety of other ingredients including charred avocado…

    7 Feb 2010 | 7:00 am
Posted by Tammy Today’s tteokbokki recipe keeps us on the Italian peninsula by using Bologna’s famous sauce as the wardrobe for the tteok noodles. When I lived in Korea, I did not know much about cooking. My cooking skills was limited to grilled cheese sandwiches and the occasional one pot meal, usually featuring a couple of chicken breasts thrown in a rice cooker with 2 cups of rice mixed with random spices thrown in for flavor. The last 3 months or so I lived in Korea, we had a Korean woman who made lunch for us every day. When she wasn’t making Korean foods like japchae,…

  • Winter English Camp in South Korea: Camp #2, Day 1 -- My Teaching Nightmare Becomes Reality: Zombie Student Attack!!!

    9 Feb 2010 | 5:38 am
Yesterday was day 1 of my second two week English winter camp. Unlike the previous two week camp that wrapped up last Friday, where there were blue skies every day, yesterday morning was gloomy and overcast.I wondered if there was any kind of portentous meaning in the gray skies and tried to shake it off as I walked into my office. I turned on my computer, printed out a few things, and then made photocopies of stuff I needed for day. To give you an idea of what I was copying (especially if you've never done a camp in Korea) here is a list of what I prepared. 1. Classroom English Rules 2. Camp…
  • Winter English Camp in South Korea: Camp #2, Day 1 — Lesson prep in Korea is the Achilles Heel of EFL teaching

    8 Feb 2010 | 4:15 am
I'm still writing up the first English camp I just finished this past Friday and will try to post the series (it covers 8 days) some time this week. This morning I came to school and did the small bit of prep I needed to do for my second two week winter English camp. Then the events of today reminded me yet again why lesson prep in Korea is pretty much the Achilles Heel of EFL teaching. Let me explain. Last December I organized an informal winter English camp workshop at my high school for other foreign teachers who wanted to collaborate ideas and materials. About 9 teachers showed up and we…
  • Bugs and Apartment Life in South Korea - A giant cockroach visited my girlfriend today . . . no, really.

    4 Feb 2010 | 4:42 am
A giant cockroach visited Julianne in her apartment this afternoon . . . no, really.I've had several different apartments in Korea over the years and never really had a major problem with bugs. I'm not saying there haven't been bugs, but the number and type haven't been anything like a serious infestation or problem. I don't know what the actual percentage is of foreign English teachers who are placed in apartments that have bug problems. I'd have to say based on how many teachers I've heard talk about it as a problem that it'd be something like 25% or so. The majority of apartments in Korea…
  • EFL Foreign Teacher Motivation - What do you do when you don't feel like teaching but have to?

    4 Feb 2010 | 4:40 am
It's a gorgeous day outside with a clear blue sky and not too cold a temperature . . . and I really don't feel like teaching. I decided that it'd be interesting to write about "What do you do when you don't feel like teaching but have to?" and see what other teachers in and out of Korea do. Here are some of the things I've done in the past. 1. Put on a tie. I normally wear a collared shirt and cotton pants or dress pants when I teach. During my five years of teaching I have gone through periods where I dressed much more casually but I found that my behavior and motivation tended to be a…

I'm way behind on writing up the seven of nine days of winter camp I've taught so far . . . I have pictures of the guys doing stuff, and stories galore . . . but for now a small story will have to do. Oh, before I get to the story there's one other interesting thing that happened today at camp. The students I'm working with are NEW freshman--technically they're still middle school students right now--and the Korean education cultural organization of the winter break period threw me a curve ball today. Let me explain. The winter break is not a consecutive block of time off from school. Korean…

It then focuses specifically on listening, examining the difficulties encountered by a group of Korean middle school students (aged 13 – 14) in undertaking listening tasks. After discussing listening strategies a lesson plan is presented and critiqued for it's possible benefit to the learners in question in the hope that the integrated teaching of strategies will help them, not only complete…

But many of those teaching are doing so illegally. The education authorities have no immediate measures planned to crack down on illegal private tutoring by foreigners.  OK. Good one. You'll note though that KT is on target for 500000 iphones in three months, only The US has sold as many units as quick or quicker. Anyway go read the rest on your own.

Lately life has been moldy and messy. The bedroom closets were infested with mold because of the difference in temperatures between inside and outside, the back side abuts an exterior wall. As a result we had to vacate the master bedroom and sleep in the baby room, clear out the closets, wash everything, navigate around mountains of stuff that used to be hidden away, get mold removal estimates, have the closets and the interior wall rebuilt and try not to become hypochondriacs for weeks. Needless to say I learned some Korean, gompangi/곰팡이 (mold) and saengi-da/생기다 (to form).

It was purchased at Daiso for 3,000w, the silver and gold balls came in a pack for 2,000w, the candy canes are handmade, the garland is a re-purposed styrofoam pouch, the star was made using part of  a kitchen sponge, and the tree skirt is actually an artfully clipped pillow cover.

The first one drove fast and furious, trying too hard to keep up with the “guys.” The second one was dressed in hanbok, traditional all the way down to her shoes. I had to take a picture to memorialize the day (not a holiday) and the outfit. Lady cab drivers are rare, probably accounting for less than 10% of taxi drivers in Seoul.

Last Winter, snow would fall occasionally, but would melt away a couple of hours later. On January 4th, 2010, though, something close to 26 cm of snow smothered Seoul. Anyhow, the whole point of this backstory is to tell you that this snow day was AWESOME! Spudgy loved it, probably because he never saw snow like this before. Picture this: Grace and I are sitting in near darkness in the living at 2:00am. We're watching Sex and the City. I'm eating a sandwich and some ice cream. Grace is happily flipping through her books and playing with the remote control. She figures out how to turn the TV on and off. That was last night. Who knows what tonight holds? My daughter has decided she does not want to sleep at all. She ended up going to sleep at 2:30am and getting up at 8:00am. I got up feeling as if someone had hit me in the face with a sledgehammer. Oh, and I have a head cold. It was a great day. I spent all morning…

I'll grant you, the off-tune warbling of really drunk Korean girls that sometimes leak through the walls and halls of local noraebang 노래방 or karaoke singing rooms can sometimes run a chill up my spine.I'll even consider that a note or two of my own has missed the mark on occasion ...Still, that's no reason to kill somebody. Unless you're in the Philippines. The NYT is reporting on a category of crime in that steamy archipelago dubbed "My Way Killings" by the media there for the frequency with which Ol' Blue Eyes' killer tune seems to be involved in the violence.... many karaoke bars…

    1) Yesterday was the last day of camp, so I'm finished with school until March 2. Yipee! To celebrate, I went to 3 Alley in Itaewon for a delicious salmon filet with seafood risotto. But they were out of risotto. Boo!2) We also celebrated in class with a little party, involving some cake, snacks and cola products. We watched whatever videos on YouTube were of interest. On of my students pulled up this one, which is pretty funny, if a bit long:3) I was directed today to this "This Modern World" cartoon from Salon (at this link, which tends to redirect to the front page, with attendent…

One of my students, whose English name is Harry, has become quite the little chatterbox. I can't really boast that camp has improved his English that much, but his confidence is through the roof.He was complaining today that his father is taking a one-week business trip to America, and taking his mother along with him, but leaving Harry and his little brother at home. His father, he said, is quite respected in his company, but treats him like a soldier. This means he orders him around. One the one hand, Harry admits he doesn't like being treated as a child, but on the other, he is afraid of…
  • A Few Notes

    1) Three day left of winter camp, but who's counting? After that, no school until March 2, which is Korea's version of the Tuesday after Labor Day, when American grade school traditionally starts the academic year.Similarly, the date follows a holiday, 삼일 Sam-il or 3 - 1, the date of one of the first displays of the Korean independence movement against Japanese occupation. To give you an idea of the moral influence the US once exerted in the world, the authors of the movement were inspired by Woodrow Wilson's speech in which he outlined the "fourteen points" of national…
