Give North Korea a break | John Delury
20 Nov 2009 | 7:30 amDenuclearisation will only come when bridges have been built with Pyongyang and it feels firmly set on a new economic courseNegotiations over the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula look set to resume. Sadly, they are unlikely to end soon. Talk of a "grand bargain" remains just that – talk.Trust between North Korea and the US, South Korea and Japan is almost non-existent. While all leaders – including North Korea's Kim Jong-il – remain committed to denuclearisation in public, none appears ready to risk much in terms of domestic politics to achieve that end. So the best the world… -

President Obama's Visit to South Korea
19 Nov 2009 | 9:16 amPresident Barack Obama visited South Korea towards the end of his Asia trip on Nov. 19. Though the summit took place amicably (The New York Times photo above shows the news conference after the summit), the public reception on the streets was divided into two camps, one with enthusiastic welcome (middle photo from the OhMyNews) from the conservative forces that stresses the two countries' alliance (some even calling for the reversal of the U.S. decision to relinquish wartime control of South Korea's military), and another camp that harbors critical views on the Obama administration's pressure… -
"The Case of Economic Engagement with North Korea"
18 Nov 2009 | 12:06 pmWhile the U.S. government and the media are preoccupied with the nuclear weapon issue in dealings with North Korea, there are other voices calling for alternative approaches, such as economic engagement, as the following summary from a recent report shows:An Asia Society/U.C.-Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation Task Force Report focuses on economic engagement with North Korea as a peaceful means of inducing change in the DPRK. As the likelihood of some form of US-DPRK talks increases, this report proposes a fundamental rethinking of Washington’s approach toward the DPRK. Economic… -
U.S. Special Envoy to Visit North Korea
10 Nov 2009 | 10:11 amAfter ten months in the office, it looks like Stephen Bosworth (photo), the U.S. special envoy for North Korea, will be actually going to North Korea for diret talks there. This comes after ten months of what seemed like a circumvention of the problem -- holding consultations with all the parties involved with the Six Party Talks with the exception of North Korea, which did not bring a breakthrough in the stalled process towards nuclear disarmament and security guarantees. It is hoped that the Bosworth trip to North Korea, and President Obama's Asia trip, will bring some tangible progress on… -

Their meetings, held initally in third countries in Europe, Japan and North America, led to the reaffirmation of the desire of Koreans towards reconciliation and reunification.International ecumenical organizations such as the World Council of Churches (WCC) have been supportive of these efforts. Have you read "Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar"?
31 Oct 2009 | 11:14 pmIt cost me an arm and a leg (72,000 won), but I bought Edwin G. Pulleyblank's book, "Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar." When it first arrived, I thought I had been ripped off because it was only a flimsy, little 206-page book, including Contents and Index pages. It did not look like it was worth 72,000 won, which is the most I have ever paid for any book, but after reading the first forty pages, I have changed my mind. It was a good investment.Though the book is not that well written or organized, it is crammed full of short-and-sweet grammar rules with one or two example sentences for… -
What does 苟且偸安 mean?
23 Oct 2009 | 11:52 pmYesterday, I bought a Korean book entitled "이이화의 한문 공부," which teaches the basics of classical Chinese writing. I bought the book not only because it was the only book in the store that taught the basics of classical Chinese, but also because it looked pretty good, at least in the store. However, after getting it home and reading more of it, I noticed a few problems. One of the problems with the book is that it assumes the reader already knows the Korean pronunciations for the Chinese characters used in many of the book's example sentences. In other words, the book gives you… -

21 Oct 2009 | 4:18 amToday, I was reading the 四字小學(사자소학), which was a book that Korean children used to study in traditional Korean schools (書堂 - 서당), when I came across something I did not understand. Was 之 (지) used to make causative verbs?
14 Oct 2009 | 8:55 amAccording to THIS WEB PAGE, the Chinese character 來 (내) was used in classical Chinese to mean, "[He] comes," and 來之 (내지) was used to mean, "[He] makes him come." In other words, the 之 (지) seems to have made "to come" (來) into a causative verb. In classical Chinese, was 之 sometimes used to make causative verbs?I am curious because I want to know if the following translation is correct:A temple ( gave ( [us] rice cake (餠), tea (茶), rice gruel (粥) and soy sauce (醬) and had us eat them.Does the 之 (지) change 食 (식) from "to eat" to "to have someone eat" (… -
What's the problem with "뭐가 불만이냐"
10 Oct 2009 | 4:21 am뭐가 불만이냐 means "What's your problem" or "What's your complaint." It is a low form that is usually used among friends. If you use it with someone who is not your friend, you are asking for a fight. The problem with the expression is that 뭐가, strickly speaking, is an incorrect construction since 뭐 is a contraction of 무엇, so it would be like saying 무엇가, which is incorrect. The correct contraction for 무엇이 is 뭬. However, since few Koreans say "뭬 불만이냐," you could just drop the subject marker and say, "뭐 불만이냐." I think I will try to use 뭬.The…

Effort Against the US Military In Elementary Schools
21 Nov 2009 | 5:17 amHere comes another effort to keep the US military out of public schools: How old is old enough for students to be approached by military recruiters? High school? Junior high? Fourth grade? How about ten weeks into kindergarten? Last week at the dinner table, my five-year-old son announced blithely, “Soldiers came to school today.” He then added, “They only kill bad people. They don’t kill good people.” He made the announcement with the same levity he uses in recalling the plot line of Frog and Toad or a Nemo video. My wife and I looked at each other… -
First Snow (Where I’m At…)
20 Nov 2009 | 11:35 pmWe had our first snow of the season where I’m teaching and living. I had told some students that morning that the sky looked like rain, but they said the forecast was clear. It came down pretty good at times for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. Big, soft flakes. Made for great snowballs. Much of it had melted by the time I looked outside the next morning, but there was still enough to cover the grass in places where the sun hadn’t shown much. -

Korea Times Continues Faulty Reporting On English Teacher Issues
20 Nov 2009 | 6:56 amMatt over at Popular Gusts has a couple of great posts up about the continuing AIDS testing of English teachers in Korea along with updates on the complaint made to Naver in regards to Anti-English Spectrum: Criticism of Anti-English Spectrum in the KH Naver’s Response to the Vandom Letter? As usual from Matt both are good reads. What I find most interesting about this is that this issue is a perfect example of how the Korean media, this time the Korea Times instead of reporting the news is instead trying to make the news. Once again its the KT’s Kang Shin-who has a long list…

Congrats again~
27 Oct 2009 | 1:04 pmEveryone is talking about it and I thought I would join the flock. Epik Highs Tablo has finally tied the knot with his girlfriend and mother of his coming child Kang HyeJung! I love this shot I want that cake Congratulations to the couple who have already headed off for their honeymoon! They look sincerely happy and I wish them the best of luck! As usual a celebrity wedding is a star studded event and peoples outfits make you wonder if they think Weddings are a casual event, but this year I picked out one outfit that made me worried for a talented celeb. I was kidding before when I said that… -
We knew it all along…
27 Oct 2009 | 12:31 pmThat CL was never really born a human being. This photo shoot has been out for a while but I will not pass up an opportunity to critique it. For “W” magazine the 2NE1 girls were made to dress up in a “gangster” theme, although it’s obvious only one person really looked at home with the “weaponry” it didn’t make things any less interesting for the group as a whole. My favorite of the shoot, CL of course. With all that major Photo shop I thought she was Hyori. Now, tell me you don’t see a very important part of the human body missing? It… -

27 Oct 2009 | 12:08 pmI’m sure a lot of you know about the Wonder Girls latest great Success with entering the BillBoard Charts with their year round (never dying) International Hit “Nobody”. Well, Congratulations to them firstly, it is an amazing feat since they’ve done more than most K-Crossovers over the last few years. JYP held a press conference for the girls last week in Seoul and mentioned how they will be concentrating on the Western World with the Wonders and will not be further promoting in Korea. Since I prefer them in Korea it’s a darn shame, nonetheless there was… -
Whose yo’ MAMA!?
27 Oct 2009 | 11:30 amOr better yet, what is your MAMA? The Mnet Asian Music Awards. After the sudden and somewhat shocking announcement that the MKMFs were coming to a close after their 10 year anniversary celebration last year, many people were left wondering what would take the place of the dodgy but youth representative end of year Award show. It had been full of plenty of controversies over the years, my favorite, Lee MinWoo throwing a tantrum and leaving JYP to stand on stage looking like a lonely freak show act (or more accurately have that performance cancelled, I prefer my turn of events albeit… -

19 Oct 2009 | 9:58 amIs King Kongs fallen younger brother. And he’s possessed all the SHINee boys and made them seriously insecure. What the hell died on MinHos head? I didn’t even know these cute little boys were on their way back. But I guess with one group suing you and the other having someone get charged with DUIs while half are in China, SM needed to have someone back and fast. All these new boybands debuting must have made their panties twist. I know what they do with their roadkill when they travel Problem though, what the hell have they coughed out? Kim Jong Il, The Average Guy
17 Nov 2009 | 6:53 amSometimes I wonder what would have happened if Kim Jong Il was born south of the DMZ. Certainly he wouldn't be one of the world's most feared (and laughed at) dictators. What would life be like for the figurehead of Communist Korea if he grew up in the uber-capitalist south? ...(dreamy harp music)......I imagine that maybe he'd be one of those guys who's always selling stuff on the subway like it's a reputable business endeavor. Every day, he'd come in a nicely-pressed business suit (unfortunately, he'd have to leave the signature shades at home) and try to convince thousands of sleepy,… -
A Simple Revelation
15 Nov 2009 | 6:52 amAfter a near-two-week hiatus, I've posted twice now in the past two days. Pretty surprising. Think I'll keep up? Probably not.I had a simple revelation today, while I was at home sweeping my floor. Actually I spent a lot of time at home the past two days. With most of my friends busy or away and the weather being quite cold, it seemed like my best option was staying at home, sitting in front of the computer, or just generally being lazy. Pretty pathetic I guess, but staying at home and having some time to yourself isn't always a bad thing.Anyway, I realized that part of the reason I never… -
And So It Goes...
14 Nov 2009 | 8:39 amHas it really been nearly two weeks since my last update? I guess it has, but I really have no idea where the time has gone. Last time I was motivated and ready to go back to my old posting ways, but alas, here I am again. Sorry about that.So what have I been up to? Honestly, it's been so long that I really don't know. I was sick there for awhile (was it before or after my last post?), and though I had the time to sit down and type up an overdue update, the thought of it, along with the sickness, the discovery of 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,' and a slight addiction to Madden NFL… -
Winter Is Coming
2 Nov 2009 | 10:09 amBicycles on the Subway! It's so hard to believe that it has been about two months since I returned to Korea. I've been busy and have done a lot since I got back, but I still can't seem to figure where my time has gone. It feels like it should still be summer, but despite my unwillingness to accept the reality, winter is coming on us quickly. And it is only now that I realize how much I hate Korean winter.I've been meaning to update for quite a while now. I don't know what my problem has been, but I'm starting to feel like this blog is slowly dying. I've been lazy, sick (which is why this post… -
'He is Die'
22 Oct 2009 | 8:18 am...so goes the common response that I get 95% of the time when a student is absent or late from class and I ask everyone else, "Where is -----?" I guess they think it's pretty funny to constantly kill their peers in their minds and see them miraculously resurrect themselves ten minutes later, walking through the door, fifteen minutes late.***Speaking of people who didn't die, my good friend B recently came down with something wicked. More than likely, he had the dreaded H1N1 (sounds like the name of a new K-pop girl group) and recovered just fine. We'll never know for sure, however, since he…

Me likey. And this is my favourite Veils song: -
Private Moon: Birthdays in the SK Army
12 Nov 2009 | 8:13 pmThis is my friend James and I a few months ago, when he had a few days leave from the South Korean Army - in the few months since I'd seen him, he'd gained a new army hairdo and a new army stance. I can't remember if I have written about the army, I'm sure I have...but here is some information about the compulsory service at Ask a Korean.James is a bit of a world traveller, spending most of his childhood in New Zealand but came back to Korea after University study in Germany and began his service in May. Out of body experience
9 Nov 2009 | 5:29 pmI just had a weird experience. I was working on some lesson plans, when I decided to listen to Counting Crows. Now, Counting Crows is one of my favorite bands. I started listening to them in high school, and have been doing so ever since. But I listened to one particular song that I guess I haven't listened to in a long time, and suddenly, I felt like I was sitting in my room in my old house in high school, listening to the same song as the sixteen or seventeen year old me. But it actually felt more like I was current-me, sitting in a chair next to youger-me, listening to this same song… -
Two stories
1 Nov 2009 | 5:06 pmLast week, in light of the Swing Flu hysteria that's going on in Korea, a students walked into my room after class, and said, "Teacher, I'm infected." And I said, "Oh no!" And then he laughed and said, "I'm... in...fected... with... music!" And then he proceeded to dance out of the room backwards. And then just today, I was in my office at my desk, with my headphones on, listening to music. I turned my head, and I was startled to see a student about 6 inches from my face, waiting to ask me something. Apparently, it's rude for a student to tap a teacher on the shoulder. I don't know how long… -

Update
7 Oct 2009 | 3:39 pmFall is coming! The weather this past week has been absolutely perfect here in South Korea. I've actually been wearing a jacket in the mornings. Now that our second contract year has officially started, we'll starting living over the weather that we have experienced here, and I have to say... fall was probably the best! Of course, coming from Southern California, I haven't had much experience with trees changing colors, and things like that, so I'm probably easy to please.Well, let's see. My week is easy here. Last week was Chuseok holiday, so I had a long weekend, and this week my school has…

'Tis The Season For Reading
16 Nov 2009 | 3:21 amAs one season fades into another, I take the time at the beginning of class to discuss seasons. It's been said that Korean seasons follow specific calendar dates. I've never bothered looking at the calendar but this is one of those Korean things I accept without any legitimate research. It's freezing outside. Literally. Sleet fell from the heavens today. My heater needed to be turned on for an hour last night. The weeks forecast shows a similar weather pattern, with probable snow. Thus, in this foreigner's mind, it's winter. Not so for my dear little punks. I asked them what season it was. -
I May Have Agreed to Marriage in a Country With No Dr. Pepper
15 Nov 2009 | 4:59 amI had intended this weekend to be one where I explored a few possible hobbies/interests. I was able to check two off the list. The first was collecting accidental fiances. It started out innocent enough. I was in a hurry and not in a mood to chit chat but my taxi driver wanted my life story. I was brooding. He kept asking me to smile. One is physically unable to frown when someone is begging them to smile. It's impossible. Believe me, I tried. We exchanged the important facts; name, age, relationship status. After we exhausted our abilities in one another's language we exchanged numbers. What… -
My Stupid Seven Days a Week
10 Nov 2009 | 4:00 amThe past seven days have been Stupid Days. You know the ones. Where everyone around you is stupid, so stupid, and only you can be the one to identify the stupidity of their ways. If I could have spoken my stupid thoughts aloud, here's how some of my conversations would have gone:Misoon, calling on Friday morning, "Hey, you know how I told you of the 60+ cases of swine flu at the school and how we are shut down for five days? Well it's not really true. The principal wants the healthy students and teachers to be here so they can work and learn more and also cough disgusting virus all over… -
Happy Birthday!!!!!
9 Nov 2009 | 8:30 amAs I was talking with a bunch of friends this week about parents, I realized that my parents are quite young compared to the parents of other people my age. Who woulda thunk it? Today is my mama's 49th 39th birthday! She doesn't look a day over 32. Seriously! Every time I see a picture of her, she looks like she's regressing in age. I got to spend some quality Skype time with her over the weekend and I was shocked at how lovely and beautiful she is! I think having her two terror rugrats completely mostly out of the house helps. It looks like she's enjoying the empty nest.Mom, I hope you have… -
That's it, I'm definitely not in Korea anymore.
4 Nov 2009 | 9:32 pmI didn't have any classes today. Obviously I've been internet browsing all day, planning a vacation or two, checking on jobs post-Korea, figuring out if I should go home this vacation or next and watching copious amounts of TV. Oh, and I finished a book too. I'm the master multi-tasker. I could have been working on lesson planning but I figure since I'm planned up till the end next semester, I shouldn't bother. So, as I was in my classroom all day, alone, I didn't see any of the students in the school. I heard them, but didn't see then. And then I went to lunch. School lunches in Korea are…

Currytown. A Great Indian Buffet in Itaewon
21 Nov 2009 | 12:20 amCurrytown is where I've been getting my Saturday curry fix for the last two weeks and their buffet is great. For 15,000 won you get samosas as big as a baby's fist (mmmm...baby...), nice tandoori, a variety of curries, and chai. It's got a rustic look to it. It reminds me of the Indian places that I used to go to in college. PLUS, they play Bollywood on a big TV. Here's the Naan and they -

The elements and the textures should be looked alike but in different ways. For example, omija can be used as a mixer for drinks or as a dressing on barbecue meat. I think that the taste is similar to cranberries in a way so it would go well with roast duck and

20-year-old gets eight months for raping child.
20 Nov 2009 | 4:55 pmThis isn't an example of the harsher sentences supposed to come down to sex offenders after the "Na-young Incident". From the Korea Times:Lee was booked but not physically detained in December 2007 after he lured a seven-year-old boy to a neighborhood public restroom and raped him for 20 minutes. The Seoul Nambu District Court said, “The accused didn’t show any signs of remorse and committed a similar crime after being convicted twice before.“It is inevitable he will be incarcerated, especially considering the mental stress the seven-year-old victim is undergoing,” the court… -
Website in English for motels in Seoul, maybe.
19 Nov 2009 | 9:18 pmThis Korea Times article is so thin and uninformative that I don't even want to link to it, but it reminds readers of the "Innostel" website, an online directory for motels in Seoul. City Hall certifies lodgings with more than 10 rooms when they meet certain standards, awarding Innostel recognition that gives users such benefits as a reduction in water fees. What? Anyway, innostel.visitseoul.net currently only lists 95 motels, but there are plans to extend that to 150 soon. The name means:Innostel has emerged as an innovative service that connects operators of lower-priced accommodations with… -

That doesn't mean my face doesn't hurt listening to "Gossip Girl" by Rainbow (레인보우 거십걸):I think that's the most flagrant overuse of Asian poses since the last time Kara left the house. 19 Nov 2009 | 3:30 pmThe Korean-language version of the Korea Times has looked at the disappointing site ifriendly.kr and the response it generated, citing this page and this post. Korean Sociological Image #24: Childcare is Women’s Job
18 Nov 2009 | 6:36 am( Source: Raysoda ) For traveling parents, this is a godsend: Asiana’s mother-friendly services have been gaining enthusiastic reviews from those who have been through the ordeals of traveling with infants. Through the recent launch of “Happy Mom Services,” the airline has been providing exclusive check-in counters for mothers at the airport, breastfeeding covers and baby slings free of charge for travelers with babies. It gets even better: In response to the enthusiastic reception, Asiana will extend the “Happy Mom Services” to 66 airports internationally. Also,… -
Korean Movie Review #2: A Good Lawyer’s Wife (2003)
16 Nov 2009 | 6:59 am( Source ) Like last week’s choice of movie, A Good Lawyer’s Wife defies easy description. Heavily marketed on the basis of its explicit sexual content, and with probably no longer than 10 minutes between one sex scene and the next, on the surface it is simply pornography masquerading as art-house cinema. Or so I thought when I first saw it at the cinema in August 2003, my – let’s be honest – appreciation of Moon So-ri’s (문소리) nude body tempered by the knowledge that the object of her affections was Bong Tae-gyu (봉태규), then regularly appearing… -
Korean Sociological Image #23: Male Objectification
11 Nov 2009 | 4:14 amAcutely aware of the role my heterosexual male gaze can play in my choice of subjects and images for this blog sometimes, ironically I spend more time looking for those involving men these days, hoping to find something of note with which to achieve a balance. In itself, this new commercial with boy-band 2PM hardly qualifies. But not only is male objectification an increasingly common theme in Korean advertising in recent months (see here and here for two examples featuring Lee Byung-hun {이병헌} and JYP {박진영} respectively), this would easily be one of the most audacious examples… -
Gendered Tea-drink Advertising in South Korea (Updated)
5 Nov 2009 | 7:38 pm( Source ) Granted, Marxism might not be the first thing one thinks of when one sees Lee Hyori’s navel. But as it turns out, it’s a perfect fit. If you’ll bear with me for a moment, once a market is saturated, I learned at university in New Zealand, there is a inherent tendency for a company’s rate of profit to fall. But this can be offset by re-marketing and/or making new varieties of the original product, and accordingly my lecturer posited the plethora of varieties of Coca-Cola available in the U.S. as a reflection of the greater capitalistic development of its… -
UEE in Orange
5 Nov 2009 | 4:15 pm( Source ) With apologies to those readers that have come to expect more serious posts on this blog, but I thought this was an exceptionally cute picture of UEE (유이)! Yes, even I need to let my hair down on occasion. And of course I’m well aware that it’s part and parcel of Lotte’s marketing of its new Cheoum Cheoreom Cool (처음처럼 쿨) brand of soju to women, which strangely uses the sexual availability of, well, women as its main theme, and that both it and others in the series have been extensively photoshopped. Despite her resulting rather alien-looking legs though,…

The Miele Guide 2009/2010
18 Nov 2009 | 9:30 pmI just received the new edition for The Miele Guide, and it’s much improved from last year. It’s thicker. Korea just gets six pages and it’s still Singapore heavy (that’s where it’s published), but that’s a big improvement over last year’s two pages, and this year it’s not all restaurants in the same hotel. In fact, some of ZenKimchi’s faves, like Star Chef’s Hu-nam Kim, The W Kitchen’s Ciaran Hickey, and Chef Meili’s Christian Meilinger are mentioned. Chef Meili even received some award, and I don’t think… -
Food Pr0n: HanSpoon
18 Nov 2009 | 12:29 amA handful of us were lucky enough to be invited to a tasting at GR Cafe in Hongdae for HanSpoon Food Studies Club Gastronomique. I’m also thrilled that we have something like this here. I’ve heard of food clubs like this in cities around the world, where chefs and foodies get together and just go overboard with decadence. We had a great time there, and I hope it continues to take a strong presence in the Seoul food scene. Props go to Chef Eddie Ahn (pictured with yours truly) and the chefs and organizers for such a great evening. It was such a whirlwind, that I can’t… -

The Latest Blunder in “Globalization?”
12 Nov 2009 | 6:44 amI just scanned through a fluff piece in the Dong-a Ilbo where they interviewed hotel chefs on what Korean food needs to do to globalize. It’s a theme that’s recycled each month in the papers. I agreed with Chef Shim Chang-shik of the Grand Ambassador Seoul that Korean food needs to stay true to itself. Again, the cringe-inducing catchword “well-being” found its way into the article. Yes, that works for Japan and maybe certain parts of California. But the rest of the world still cares about taste before green tea powder. Needing to create a world-class chef to… -

2009 Seoul Lantern Festival — Saturday night pictures . . .

I think I got some pretty nice shots.I guess some things I might mention about the festival are . . . H1N1 ‘Clinic’ is really a tent outside the International Foreign Clinic and ER at Seoul National University Hospital . . . wow.
9 Nov 2009 | 3:21 amAbout 3 days after visiting the ER of a hospital in Seoul (see this link for the story), and getting Tamiflu along with several other medicines, Julianne began to feel worse not better. We headed back to the hospital last Wednesday morning after she called me at school to say she needed my help. Arriving at the hospital we headed to the International Foreigner Clinic. As we walked through the main entrance of the hospital I couldn’t help thinking ‘oh my god, there are so many people coming and going from the hospital, and many of them are elderly, why is there no temperature check and… -
H1N1 and visiting a South Korean Hospital — Do NOT pick your nose and then hand out sterile masks!
9 Nov 2009 | 3:18 amAlmost two weeks ago Julianne became very ill with flu-like symptoms. But she didn’t have a fever so we thought, perhaps wrongly (apparently a fever is NOT mandatory to have H1N1), that she probably didn’t have H1N1. A couple days later she was really sick and having some trouble breathing so we headed to the hospital. The first contact people in the ER are two clerks behind a counter, and one to two security guards who monitor incoming patients and people. Considering the hype over H1N1 I was surprised that there wasn’t a person at the door taking everyone’s temperature as they… -

I looked over all the lessons I’ve designed and chose my ‘Greatest Hits’ . . . I also sat down with my co-teacher and went over all the dates on which I’d have no classes due to tests, field trips, and any other of the myriad reasons that classes get canceled. I thought that my semi-long term planning would not be screwed up and that I’d anticipated everything I could that might effect my lesson planning . . . boy was I wrong. But the…

Okyeonjeongsa | The Spirit of Andong
19 Nov 2009 | 4:39 pmI’m off to Andong this weekend and will be posting plenty from that trip. For now, go have a peek at Shim’s great set in today’s Image of Korea. Love that wooden architecture. There’s something about staying in a traditional hanok during the winter months that’s far more appealing than when it’s warm out. Maybe it’s just the Canadian in me. On the subject, there’s a good article about those very culturally rich buildings in today’s JoongAng Daily. It’s just been a little maddening lately. Together with planning my winter trip to… -

16 Nov 2009 | 4:48 pmShim’s got a great photo set of Gosam Lake in Anseong, one of my favourite parts of Korea. Acclaimed Korean director Kim Ki-duk filmed “The Island” here and it’s not hard to see why. Pretty picturesque. What Camera Should I Get?
11 Nov 2009 | 6:05 pmI won’t bore you with specifics as to how digital cameras work. Frankly, I’d be taking the fun right out of it if I were to do so. Besides, I learned most of what I know from just getting out there and experimenting. However, if you want a quick run-down before you start combing shops for gear, give this a read. It’s the best online user guide out there, and will give you just the right amount of knowledge to deflect all the salesman babble and get at the heart of what you need. More On Android
13 Nov 2009 | 7:12 amThings are definitely afoot in the Korean mobile space with SK Telecom coming out yesterday saying they are about to jump on the Android bandwagon - in spite of Apple it would seem: SK Telecom, South Korea's biggest mobile telephony carrier, plans to release a "smart" phone powered by the Google-backed Android operating system next year. Cold in Korea
18 Nov 2009 | 6:04 pmThis week has been very cold in Korea. Weather forecasts snow today. It’s hard for me to leave the warmth of ondol/온돌 floors to step outside into the freezing air. Managed to make one trip out to pick up things to beat the cold ~ or catching one that is. Gyool/귤 have lots of vitamin C, are tasty and practically free this season. I got a 4kg box for 5,000W ~ that’s less than $1 per pound. Also required this winter is a face mask to guard against the H1N1 flu. Just about every other person on the street is wearing one. Laver Lesson
12 Nov 2009 | 5:56 pmFeeling guilty about all the packaging on the tiny packets of laver/김 with only seven slivers of seaweed, I finally learned how to cut the big sheets neatly from my aunt. Voila, just the right size laver and they can be kept in an airtight container for a few days. Saves money and the environment. -

Persimmon Season
3 Nov 2009 | 5:33 amPersimmons are in season now. There are three kinds at the market right now. The soft, mushy ones are called yun-shi/연시. The crunchy, squat ones are called dahn-gahm/단감. And the conical ones that need to ripen like an avocado are called hong-shi/홍시. Tip: Persimmons could cause constipation if you eat the lighter colored flesh right beneath the leaf topper. Take a pair of ever-present kitchen shears and snip it away while you’re at the sink or use a knife to remove that part. Baby enjoys eating yun-shi but certainly can’t eat too many. After a fall, our bed turned into a big crib.

A Scooter Tour of Bucheon, Korea

Now we have a scooter and can ride a lot further (with a lot less energy), and our camera doesn't suck as terribly as before! So, this time, we drove around the streets of Bucheon, Korea on our scooters and filmed the whole deal, including any important landmarks along the way. Taking Care of Your Cats and Dogs in Korea
31 Oct 2009 | 8:36 amShareRecently, our Spudgy dislocated his knee. It was a terrible experience: he lifted his leg to pee, and - being the gimpy dog that he is - fell over in agony. He was screaming and howling, and it broke our hearts. We hopped in a taxi and went to Seoul immediately. Now, we could have gone to a vet in Bucheon in a fraction of the time it took us to get to Seoul, but we knew that Spudgy would get the best care at Mari Animal Hospital. They're located in the Hongdae area, and we've been going to them from the beginning with Spudgy. Their English is great, which makes taking care of Spudgy so… -
Martina's Trip to Jeju Island

It is known as the Hawaii of Korea, and it lives up to the name with palm trees, volcanic rocks, and gorgeous beaches. It is a totally different world, and you don't even think you're in Korea anymore...except for all the Korean people. Anyhow, Martina was lucky enough to go on a trip to Jeju Island with the entire second year grade of her school. Korean Monsoon Season

We think that we gave off the impression, though, that rainy season is all cute and sweet, with nice umbrellas and cute outfits and all. So we decided to post a video about the horrors of monsoon season. We waited for an especially nasty storm to hit Bucheon, then went outside to brave the storm and record some crazy footage. You'll never believe how bold some people are! Sure, you'd go out in the rain with an umbrella, but would you go grocery shopping on a bike with an umbrella in one hand through a monsoon?! (Why does that sound like Konglish … more coffee). HT to my twitter feed and King Sejong. -
12 Nov 2009 | 3:30 am
12 Nov 2009 | 3:30 amAnyone got any news on that mass firing at a uni in Daegu - from what I heard all the foreign staff that didn’t have masters were let go/not resigned. Then when the next lot’s contracts (master degree holders) came up, they were told to write a 5000 word ESSAY defending why they should be able to keep their jobs. They wrote a letter of complaint to the president of the university who then fired all of them!! Seriously?? -
Thank you for yelling at me. You’ve now confirmed my decision for me
11 Nov 2009 | 5:21 pm2.5 years and we are leaving! * YAY People in this country have explosive tempers and as you can see from this blog, I do too. This is not a personality trait that I’d like to foster. Last night was the deciding factor. About to get off the train I grabbed my ridicously heavy should bag from the overhead compartment/rack thing and as I slung it with a grunt over my shoulder some old man was walking by and got nudged by it. I quickly pulled my bag back thinking, shit I hit someone. He stops, turns and starting yelling, in my face. I looked around in shock, thinking,… -
AAAGGGHHHH
8 Nov 2009 | 5:18 pmAren’t you supposed to become more patient as you age? Apparently not in my case as once again I fly into a rage that the asshole plumber that’s renovating upstairs has decided to turn off the water to the building without prior notice. So here I sit. Annoyed at the lack of common courtesy that goes on here (and waiting to see if that water will go on or do I need to go to work stinky ). Someone’s at the door. Nice – fucking plumber guy that barges into the apartment and I thought that it was him but seeing as I’d recognize the crack of his ass prior to his…

Transcript: How Lee Myung-bak Imagined His Lunch with Barack Obama Would Go
20 Nov 2009 | 1:34 amBalack Obamer: . . . so then I told the President of Japan, "If you call Dokdo 'Takashima' again, I'll nuke Hiroshima a second time, bitch! He cried like a war crime-victim and signed an apology in full to the comfort women including financial reparations, and signed over Dokdo to Korea... he even threw Tsushima-- that's Daemado now -- in for free, just because he felt bad.LMB: Ah. Your anecdotes bore me, Mr. Obama. Please, let's talk about the Free Trade Agreement.BO: Yes, yes. You know, my wife Michelle bought a Hyundai during our campaign, and we've been so impressed by its performance… -

Interview with Sang Hyun-joon, Korea's Top Fawner
13 Nov 2009 | 8:25 pmSang Hyun-joon comes across as a normal man, at first. He is of medium build, his haircut is a five dollar Blue Club special. His glasses make him seem like a man more comfortable in a library than a night club. But when he opens his mouth, something about him changes."In all the auspicious history of this great restaurant district, truly, we have not seen a bori-bap so succulent."Yes, Sang Hyun-joon is Korea's top pangyrist -- he's the one who writes, either directly or through ghost-writing, the best and most orgasmic articles trumpeting the greatness of Korean culture, athletics, politics,… -

Practice Cannes Award Acceptance Speech from Director of Korea's next Winner
9 Nov 2009 | 11:40 pmFor best effect, read the editorial with this page, or the video below, open in a separate window.Ladies and gentlemen, Park Chan-wook was a pioneer, but Korean film has finally arrived! Korea's artistic and cultural superiority finally reveals itself in this film. By not acting like monkeys in our own public places, and laughing at foreigners who have not been raised from childhood to live exactly like us, we believe our absolute superiority as a tourist destination has finally become clear.First, in making the greatest Korean short film in history, I'd like to thank our talent, especially…

Knitting/crochet projects/an uneventful 30th
4 Nov 2009 | 7:06 amI turned 30 yesterday. Nothing special happened. I don't feel any different, or in any type of crisis, so that's a relief. My mom, sister, and I just went out for dinner. I did realize something last night, though: nearly all of my friends are in Korea. I have hardly any friends here in Ontario anymore. I guess this is natural after spending seven plus years overseas. It seems I need my crafting time as much as I need sleep. If I don't get it, I get restless. So I try to do a little bit every day, even if I just do a few stitches/rows/rounds. I've been back on a doily kick. I don't know why… -
Halloween
1 Nov 2009 | 7:33 amWe had an uneventful Halloween this year with fewer kids than usual. There were high wind warnings yesterday, so the weather wasn't that great. H1N1 in the news and people being sick probably accounted for more kids staying in. That means there's more candy left over for us though. Grace was into the candy, too, but in the end, decided that the Smarties worked better as rattles.A week until we depart for Korea if all goes smoothly. I'm waiting on the WHO to decide whether infants actually do need the second H1N1 booster. She had a half dose last Thursday. If she does need the second, we may… -
Yay Grace!
20 Oct 2009 | 12:08 pmI'm happy to report that Grace's sleep has really improved this last month. She sleeps for 5-6 hour stretches on average (she slept a 10 hour stretch the other night), and I'm sure she will continue to improve. Not only is this good for me, but I've noticed that she seems better off, too. She is in a better mood and can stay up longer in the mornings. She used to need to go down for a nap very soon after getting up, but now she can go about a 3 1/2 hour stretch 'til that morning nap. This is really good. I'm so relieved. I hope this is the end of really boring blog posts about sleep. You'd… -
Fall!
13 Oct 2009 | 1:35 pmFall is definitely here. A lovely 10 degrees and sunny on Sunday meant a good day for photos! We also had our Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday.Grace and I are doing well. I'm still working hard to complete two books by the end of October (can it be done? I'll try...), and Grace is working hard on improving her sleep. She's doing well. She is not getting me up as often. The other night she left from 8:30pm til 5am. That was pretty long and not the usual, but I am confident those long stretches will become more frequent. Lots in store in the coming weeks. Trip to Buffalo tomorrow, going to a… -
Still here
15 Sep 2009 | 9:00 pmI have been taking a very much needed internet break these past 5 weeks. It's actually been nice to be away from the computer and be communicating with family and friends, shopping, eating, and even relaxing. The only bad part is that I have not been keeping up with my friends back in Korea or keeping up my blog. I have no idea what's going on with my many real-life, blogger, and facebook friends.I will try to write an update post sometime soon. I have extended my ticket to November 7th so that I can write two books while staying here with my parents. Time for bed!

A Post Wherein I Play Food Critic
18 Nov 2009 | 6:08 amI am blogging at you from the familiar comfort of the chicken hof downstairs in my building. It's been a while, but nothing changes much here, except the faces of the waitstaff--the uniform stays the same, the individual occupying it seems to move on before very long. The chicken is reliably fresh and hot and golden crispy, the beer cold, the ambiance unobtrusive, though I like it when they play the mixed tape (er, CD or whatever) of classic sixties and seventies rock. The last time I ate chicken downstairs, I tried the new hof (2000 won obek) that took over the seafood place on the corner, but… -
There But By the Grace of ...
16 Nov 2009 | 7:24 amThe longer I live, the more acutely I am aware of the role of randomness in the circumstances of birth, and what the "luck of the draw" leads to. I was born in America during the headiest days of the American century--by the happenstance of being plopped down in the first world, I have had education, opportunity and resources unimaginable even now to about 90% of the people on Earth. I think--I hope--people who know me believe I am basically a happy guy. I don't complain a lot, and when I do it's with the understanding that this is minor, that things could be worse. In fact, my biggest… -
Frauds and Monsters
13 Nov 2009 | 5:51 amThat's what I ended up titling my lesson in second grade this week. The textbook chapter is about Scotland, for reasons which I won't get into here (mainly because I have no idea). Anyway, last week, I played 20 Questions with them under the guise of "Who Am I? Scotland Edition". They like 20 Questions, even though most classes are notoriously bad at it.First question: "You Korean singer?"For God sake, man, do you not understand why that is a horrible first question--even if the category isn't "Scotland"?!? Incidentally, the names were "associated" with Scotland, but had to be people they'd… -
Changes at Yeouido Park
12 Nov 2009 | 4:26 amThere are two meanings to the title of this post: first, I have assembled a little video made from snapshots at Yeouido Park throughout the course of the last year, organized season-by-season. I put a little Vivaldi Four Seasons behind it, Winter movement. Since it's winter (feels like, anyway!)Second, when I visited today, workers were busily redoing the walking track that runs the perimeter of the park:They are replacing the curbs with big, shiny hunks of polished granite, and laying in improvements to the storm drains. Some kind of construction is going on above the stage area at the north… -
Seoul Lantern Festival
11 Nov 2009 | 5:50 amSo, it was cold and it was windy but that did not prevent about five trillion people from showing up at the Cheonggyecheon for the opening festivities of the Seoul Lantern Festival. I realized many of those people had come to see and hear the Hallyu headliners perform for free. K-Pop ain't my bag, so I wandered downstream to get a good look at the "lanterns", which were more like parade floats or statues, really. As you walk downstream, you pass through various zones, focusing on a particular theme.Perhaps my favorite was the animals of Korean nature and mythology. The Korean tiger, now…
